Houseboat summary

This is a ship with an amazing history. She was built in 1943 with only one purpose: transport ammunition and fuel from England to France to keep the allied war machine going and win the war. Just after the war, in 1951, she ended up in Amsterdam where she could take it easy. We are proud and happy to live aboard this concrete ship and share the front part with you. As a tribute to her hard labour during WW2, we decided to renovate this place and give it a jolly 50's theme. War is over, time to celebrate life!

Houseboat description

We warmly welcome families up to four (sorry, but no more!) and couples traveling together. The whole boat is very well insulated and offers good heating so you will be comfortably warm even on the coldest winter nights.

You descend to the living room from the deck by a stairway that is slightly more steep than the average stairs, please take this into mind before booking. For most guests this is no problem at all, but I thought it would be good to mention it and be as clear as possible to avoid disappointments.

There is floor heating in the living room, kitchen and bathroom, and central heating in the bedrooms. We offer a tastefully decorated master bedroom with a comfortable double bed (160x200 cm) and a second cool bedroom with a bunkbed (1 bed is 80x200 cm and 1 bed is 80x190 cm).

The good old days

In the living room you will feel like you're back in the good old days, thanks to the retro wall paper, vintage furniture and even a real record player. Don't worry: if you're tired of the golden oldies vinyl records, you can simply connect your own device and choose your own music. Thanks to the many portholes there will be a pleasant breeze if you want, making it literally a cool place - even during hot summer days.

In the kitchen you will find a 4-stove induction cooker, microwave-oven combination, fridge with freezer and a sink - also with a retro look to it. From the kitchen you have access to the bathroom, tastefully decorated with two portholes and a comfortable rain shower, sink and toilet.

Outside space

In front of the deck you have your own little terrace where you can enjoy a drink or a smoke (note: smoking inside is strictly forbidden, as well as the use of any drugs. If you violate this rule, we will have to ask you to leave).

Location of the Houseboat

The location in the east side of the city is very convenient for those travellers who like a quit night sleep and have a lot of space around them. By bike you will get anywhere in town in less then 30 minutes. You will find a bike rental pretty much around the corner.

Just wander around and you will see the great history of this old harbor area. At the same time you will enjoy the many places to buy local grown food, great coffee and wines and of course the organic market around the corner, every Wednesday.   If you're traveling by car, we're glad to say that there is a cheap parking area at just 15 minutes distance (5 minutes tram and 10 minutes walking) where you can park for only 8 euro/day instead of the normal 3 - 4 euro/hour in the city.

Some important house rules

Please note that we do live on the same boat, but we respect your privacy. We will do the check in and show you around, and we're there if you have any questions. But for the rest, you probably won't even notice that we're there.

And one last important remark: we live in a residential area and we respect each others night rest. So know that our boat is not a party boat! Therefore we kindly ask not to make any noise after 22.00. You can smoke on the front deck terrace, but inside smoking and the use of drugs of any kind is strictly forbidden. If we notice that you do not respect these house rules, we are forced to ask you to leave without compensation of any kind. Thanks for understanding ;-)

About the history of our concrete war ship

After the war this boat has found it's way to Amsterdam where it's been used as a houseboat ever since 1953. She's docked in the eastern part of Amsterdam called Zeeburg. The name Forecastle is chosen because this part is actually the real forecastle of the original ship where the crew used to be situated during the crossing of The Channel. Now the space has been completely renovated, but we have managed to maintain lots of original details. Take the ceiling for example: the heavy concrete beams, and even the original fuel hoses are still visible. In the kitchen we have exposed the heavy steel reinforcement of the hull so show the 'core' of the ship. It is a unique insight in one of the most amazing vessels you will find in Amsterdam.

    Nice experience

Owner was responsive and a good experience. Was near to the bus stop, can take bus 48 to city center. Will be a better stay if more pillows would be provided, bathing necessities given and hangers.

Brilliant place to base yourself in Amsterdam

The houseboat is amazing - a wonderful place to base yourself in Amsterdam. Away from the crowds and party goers but a close tram ride or 7-8 euro Uber ride away from the centre. The location is well served for shops and local restaurants too.

The houseboat is very charming and calming. A perfect base for both couples and small families.

The owner Juul made sure we were settled in well and I am sure would have helped if we had any questions or issues - we had none.

I've already recommended the houseboat to many of my friends and hopefully will return myself soon.

Well done Juul and family for creating such a fantastic place.

    Lovely home base

Comfortable accommodations for our family of 3.  The beds were comfy, the shower was great and even though it was hot in Amsterdam for the first couple of days the boat stayed a comfortable temperature!  Juul and his family were incredibly kind.  Getting to the city center was very easy by tram and coming home to this calm neighborhood at the end of the day was just what we needed.  Coffee, grocery stores are both nearby!

    Simply brilliant

Incredibly nice houseboat with special and beautiful furnishing in a quiet neighborhood. Spotlessly clean and all newly furnished. Very easy to get to center with public transportation. Highly recommended.

    Great spot with local scene

This houseboat is just a short bike ride to all the local and tourist spots. I do suggest getting a bike as it would be too far to walk. Must be able to use a steep staircase to access the bottom hull where the rooms are. With all that said I still highly recommend this boat. Owner is very nice and helpful. Can sleep one couple on large bed or two people on bunk bed. This boat is a solid all concrete construction and you do not feel any water movement at all!

Perfection in every detail a superb houseboat experience!

We did not really know what to expect, but staying on this newly renovated houseboat was an experience that is truly unforgettable. The location is very convenient with good public transport into town and we liked the wide views you have over the water here. The boat is docked in a former steam ship harbor and the architecture of the Eastern Docks is truly wonderful. But the true surprise is found when you enter the boat. After descending a (quite steep) stairway, you enter the 1950's (or 60's I don't know). A remarkable mix of vintage wall papers and original details (loved to see the original structure of the hull of this ship!) make it into a very special place to stay. The bedrooms are spacious enough (dock the suitcases under the beds or in the large hallway) and the kitchen and bathroom are super nice. Highly recommended if you really want something special!

Simply amazing - Almost like time traveling!

We have been so fortunate to be the first guests after the host had renovated his houseboat apartment in Amsterdam. The 50's theme is really amazing - I just LOVE the style! - and it was shown in every detail of the boat. The wall paper is spot on, as well as the cool furniture and choice of colors of the paint that is used. Although the style is 'old fashioned', the level of comfort is certainly not. The floor heating is very comfy, and during the day we opened the portholes for a nice breeze through the living room. The kids just loved their pirates room with bunk bed and a cool port hole. The master bedroom is painted in an almost mesmerizing color of green/blue and has two portholes that can be completely blinded. So no early sun waking you up for sure. During the day though lots of light enters the whole boat through the many portholes making it a very light and bright place to stay. I have never slept in such a unique and quirky place and can only recommend it - and I'm sure that your familie will do too. Thanks for having us Jules and Iris!

    Excellent and convenient accommodation

The houseboat itself is lovely, in a quiet neighbourhood, with plenty of space inside to spread out. We loved that the kitchen came fully equipped.

It is near by three tram and bus stations so travelling into city center was super fast and easy.

Juul was was an excellent host and made us feel very at home. He had many wonderful restaurant and bar reccomendations. He was very easy going and happy to answer any questions we had at any time. We would definitely stay here again.

    Fantastic!

We loved every second of our stay in Juul and Iris' beautiful boat house! It was only my partner and mines second holiday, and this was definatley the cherry on the cake.

Although you share the boat with the owners (living upstairs), you wouldn't even notice they are there, so if you are looking for a private trip this is the way to go! But on the other hand, if you have any questions or issues, they are right there to help!

The bikes were a massive bonus and saved us a lot of time and money with travelling around the city so we had more money and time to really take it in and enjoy ourselves, and the same goes for the self service kitchen.

Big thanks to the hosts of this trip, we absolutley hope to return in the future:)

    The Forecastle, 2017

The Forecastle is positioned slightly out of town in the East docklands. However, the bikes provided with the property remove this as a real issue. The area around the boat is okay. There aren't a large number of places to eat near by, though this is to be expected. However, the near by supermarket, just a ten minute walk, or five minute cycle, is large, and everything you need will be found there. The boat itself is made of the upstairs, inhabited by the owners, and the downstairs, the rented area. The area is not amazingly large, but for two people is more than adequate. The decor is really nice, with modern aspects. There is no oven, but for a short stay the stove and toaster oven provide enough. The toilet is small but functional. There are very few Windows, which is a mild issue, but not to say the boat is dingy or dark. The bed is comfortable. The heating is good.

Great place great guy and overall a great stay!

I stayed on The Forecastle. It was a lovely boat with enough space for three guys. Juul was a top host very informative and helpful. He let us use his bikes that made getting around super easy. As we were on a fishing trip he also showed us where to fish, how to fish and who to fish with. The only down sides were the parking that is quite far away from the boat. You have to get the tram to the park and ride car park. Also you have to move your vehicle every three days or you will get a fine like we did and paid a whopping €90. The other alternative was to park directly outside of the boat and that was something like €27 for 24 hours so we quickly decided that was not the best option. So next trip I will really have to look into finding a cheaper alternative for storage of my vehicle. Also the kitchen had a microwave but no oven that we really could have done with as we didn't want to eat out every night. Giving 4 out of 5 due to the parking problems as for host and boat 5 out of 5.

    Dreamy Coziness

Juul is an excellent host, and the houseboat is just amazing. With the two bikes offered, we did not need to rent bikes or buy daily passes to public transport, so we could save some money. City center 20 mins cycling away. The neighborhood is a very quite one, so we were able to get a good sleep every night, to have the energy to explore Amsterdam the next day. 5 stars for Juul and the Forecastle!

Wonderful host and fantastic boathouse !

Juul is a very nice host. He always offer help to us, eg. We need to print out some e-tickets and ask him where can we find a paid printer. He offer to print out for us! And we just want to check out if any fan in the boathouse since it is a bit hot during daytime, he brought us one immediately! For the boathouse, it is cozy, nice decorated with high privacy. You can get all the things you needed there basically. The boathouse is very clean. Neighborhood is nice which is a truly residential area. You can see children playing around in the nearby park and people chilling in the deck. Within walking distance (5-10mins), there are 2 supermarkets. For getting to central, it is around 5-10mins by tram (and tram station is within 10mins walk from boathouse). Our stay is just fantastic and I'd highly recommend this boathouse !

    Superb stay!

Superb stay! Jul warm welcome from, it was immediately felt like home! Housing is true to the description, clean, equipped and most carefully decorated, very cozy! It is totally free to our whereabouts, because housing is really private. The bicycle provisions are ultra convenient, it is in the city center in 15 minutes. The area is quiet, with supermarkets and bus and tram stops within 10min walk. I would definitely return!

Our experience in Amsterdam and on the house boat is one we will truly not forget! Juul was incredibly helpful and easy to reach. He is flexible and friendly. The boat is beautiful and clean-- perfect for couples looking for something quiet and special, yet still conveniently located close to the city center and public transportation lines. We highly recommend this choice!

Awesome place, very private houseboat rental

Juul welcomed us and was available for any help needed, and fortunately, we needed no help. We had everything at its place. The neighbourhood was close to the city central, 5 minutes by tram and trams there work sharp! It was a peaceful neighbourhood, perfect for coming home from Amsterdam experiences. :) We had separate access to our room, which was awesome! Juul respected our intimacy and we thank him for that! :)

Uncomplicated and likeable host - cosy houseboat

Living on a houseboat was truly great and a special experience. The room is cosy and tasteful decorated. The interior is functional, the ceiling height is quite low so you have to consider this if you are taller than 1.80m. Same in the bathroom, it was rather small. Besides you should be aware that there is just a little bulls-eye in the kitchen, so its not possible to look out - as mentioned in Juul's description. The area is quite and the street is nice with lots of other houseboats and interesting architecture. The tram station is not far away (about 5 minutes to walk). The city center can be reached in 10 minutes by tram. Juul was uncomplicated and very likeable!

We had a great few days in Amsterdam! We didn't meet Juul, as he was busy becoming a Dad, but he was flexible with our arrival time and his friend met us with the keys. It's a fantastic location, we walked everywhere. The boat was super clean and tidy, loved the disco shower and enjoyed sitting in the window seat at the moorhens floated by.

Excellent week at Jules. Home warm and cozy houseboat. A single opening on the outside, a window in the kitchen, but the studio is vast. Great charm of a little way Brooklin channel! Spacious and comfortable - perfect for two

We stayed in this houseboat in October and we had an excellent time! Jules and Iris were great hosts, accomodating and welcoming. The Forecastle itself is very comfortable and spacious. Having a corner with the television and a pile of dvd's was perfect since we like to chill out after a great day in the city. Also it was very nice to be able to cook in the cosy kitchen since we did not want to eat out every day. You can get easily to this Amsterdam houseboat by tram either bus or bike and you're in the city centre in less then 10 minutes and the area itself is also pretty cool. We'll absolutely choose this place again  if we get back to this lovely city. Thanks for everything and cheers from Dublin!

Juul was very friendly. He answered all our question before and during our stay; he was truly helpful. We find the houseboat lovely and cosy decorated. It's situated close to the city center but very quit at night. You will find everything you need in this lovely studio. Loved it - will come again

We hired this houseboat in July and had a great time. Although I bumped my head once or twice, I couldn't help falling in love with this ship with it's typical designed rooms, warm interior and nice terrace in front of your door. Iris and Juul are great hosts and have given great tips about Amsterdam in general and the eastern docks especially. Also the history of this ship, sailing from England to France to supply the allied troops to beat the nazi's is amazing. Thumbs up for the owners who will help you getting around and even arrange bikes for you.

And last but not least: you can swim right in front of the boat!

    Will be back for sure!

    What a surprise!

We have been to Amsterdam several times now and always rented a hotel room. What a relief it was to stay with Juul and Iris at their Forecastle, perfect for a couple and a lovely atmosphere. The studio feels warm and cosy and the open living / bedroom has a comfortable size with a really good quality bed. Although the kitchen and bathroom are not the biggest on the market, everything you need is there. We had a great week and really enjoyed 'our' forecastle. And thanks for the good tips on the whereabouts in Amsterdam east. What a surprise! Marge & Liam, Minnesota

    Very good value for money

We stayed here the first week of July and had a great time. Loved the boat with it's wooden floor and lovely kitchen. The stairs are quite steep but you get used to it in a minute and after a day it's really no problem at all. In just a few days the forecastle has become 'our little secret', a secret that we love to share with others haha ;-) And last but not least we think it's really good value for money since we paid only 500 euro for a week. With love from Antwerp, Sonja
