Houseboat summary

The interior of this unique floating apartment, on the verge of the Jordaan, is inspired by the 'space age'. A time when mankind reached for the moon, and beyond. This space exploration influenced designers around the world to create completely new furniture, concepts of living and of course... the Lava Lamp. And this is now available aboard my wonderful houseboat on one of the most charming canals of Amsterdam. Groovy baby!

Houseboat description

Important note: no smoking or drugs of any kind allowed aboard!

rn

rn

Once you set foot on That 70's Boat, it is like you get into a time capsule. The interior architect was given the task to create a genuine and unique experience with eye for detail. He has not failed: from the funky wall paper to every single artefact aboard, you will truly feel that you are in that funky era. We warmly invite you to surprise both yourself and your beloved one with a unique experience!

rn

The first thing you will see in the hallway is an original stamp of the Sputnik satellite, which marked the start of The Space Age in 1957. Open the door to your apartment to enter the spacious living room with a comfortable couch, large flatscreen tv and a epic round table with bottle holes in it. From here you have a full view over the canal thanks to the large sliding window. On the side of the boat there is a wonderful floating garden with bamboo plants that create a wonderful, private and warm atmosphere inside the boat. The whole apartment has floor heating for your convenience.

rn

On your left hand side there is the dining area with four genuine tulip chairs of the world famous designer Eero Saarinen. Designed in the late 50's, and now more popular then ever. The buffet cupboard is also vintage, contributing to the authentic experience that we want to offer. There is a Nespresso coffee maker, cooker, refrigerator and a sink, but no cooking facilities. And why would you want that? With a wide variety of great bars and restaurants within minutes walking, you will most likely have problems choosing where to eat every night.

rn

The bedroom is a place of tranquility, a place to land and have a great night sleep. Here you also have water view, so you can watch the swans, geese and ducks swimming by right from your bedroom. We offer a high quality queen size bed. And how proud I am to have found a genuine Herda lamp from the 70's - hope you like it as much as I do!

rn

In the bathroom, with Italian tiling and a cute porthole, there is a large rain shower, toilet, small sink and a hair dryer.

rn

About the area where the houseboat is located, this is called 'Oud West', or in English 'Old West'. This is right next to the famous Jordaan area where you can wander for hours without getting bored a bit. Countless restaurants, bars, boutique shops and museums are waiting for you. The Anne Frank House is just 5 minutes walking away, and also the Westerpark, Museum Square and Dam Square are within walking distance. Public transport is litterally around the corner, taking you to every possible corner of the city within 30 minutes.

rn

Last but not least I want to let you know that you have access to the amazing roof terrace of 5 x 5 meters till 10 pm all year round. Without a doubt the most amazing place to sit back and relax. And one last thing that is good to know: our boat is totally drugs and smoke free, so no drugs of any kind is allowed aboard.

rn

We hope you appreciate to go all the way with this daring design, and we look forward to welcome you aboard!

    A beautiful and quiet experience

The place and the boat are great, and it was a beautiful experience to live those moments surrounded by ducks and birds!

    two little material remarks :

-not enough light in the bedroom

    - please put something to hang the towels in the shower

But these are details, and we were really pleased to be back in the 70’s

    Elisa

    RESPONSE OF THE OWNER

Dear Elisa,  I'm glad to hear you had a wonderful time, and thank you for the wonderful review. About the bedroom light: so sorry to hear that the light in the bedroom was insufficient. I have checked and replaced the current lights with better ones. And the towel rack is replaced as well (it disappeared mysteriously last week...). So thanks so much for your valuable feedback, this really helps improving our service!

    Great weekend!

We (2 persons) stayed on the boat for three nights over a weekend in late June and were really happy on the accommodation. Check in worked really well and the place is just great with the big opening windows and the canal view. The location was easy to find and was really quiet with no through traffic neither on the canal nor the street so we had a really good night sleep every night. I can recommend this boat for anyone looking for a nice and comfortable house boat accommodation with some personal touch and cool 70's interior.

    Awesome place!

We stayed on Valkiria's houseboat for 3 nights in December and it was awesome!! It's such a quirky, cosy place to stay. The living room is such a cool place to hang out in, and being down at the water level is so relaxing. The big windows make for beautiful viewing! It's also really quiet down there because you're removed from the street. We had lots of really friendly swans and geese come to visit too - we even got some frozen peas to feed them! The location is amazing, we never had to take the tram once as we enjoyed walking around so much and the boat is so central. I was initially a bit worried as the boat is shared (although your half of the boat is completely private!) but you would almost never know anyone was on the other side of the boat. If you're hanging out in the living room it's actually quite far removed from the other half of the boat, so we weren't as worried about disturbing anyone (although we weren't loud - I hope!) Oh and the bed is so comfy!! I would 100% recommend Valkiria's houseboat to anyone visiting Amsterdam. We'd absolutely love to stay again!

    cute, comfortable oasis!

Valkiria was responsive and helpful and her house out is darling and comfortable, a great oasis to retire to at the end of a long day of touristing. The houseboat is pretty conveniently located to a couple tram stops, and some great local eateries. We loved staying in a quiet neighborhood in a spot we otherwise might not have seen and it was so easy to get around. The houseboat is cozy, and we were happy w the spacious shower and the big windows althoigh the sinks are small for my taste. Overall though the experience of sharing the houseboat added to the trip and we're so happy we stayed here. Thank you, Valkiria!

    Lovely location, boat, and host!

Very glad I chose to stay on this boat during my time in Amsterdam. It's a little out of the centre, but easily reached by tram from the central train station in 15 minutes.

The area is filled with great shops and restaurants, and there's a well-stocked grocery store just over the next bridge within a 2 minute walk.

The boat itself has great features - the 70's decor is great, but not overwhelming. The bed is fantastic!

All my contact with the host were prompt and friendly :)

    Peaceful

Had a wonderful time on the houseboat! One of the highlights of our trip was waking up and seeing the water right there, it was just the most peaceful way to start the day and unlike any other experience. The decor was fun and the bed was super comfortable. Location was great!

    Wonderful designed houseboat studio

We stayed at Valkiria's houseboat studio and can highly recommend it. The interior is just amazing, really like a dive back in time with many funny details. Loved the lava lamp at night! And the location is absolutely top-notch with very nice views over the canal. All the best from Berlin - we love you!

    Great Location

This half a houseboat's location was convenient to everything.  The roof terrace is a great place to relax and people watch but the narrow, steep, rail-less stairs to get there can be tricky so beware. There is a coffee maker with coffee and tea supplied which was nice but no microwave to warm leftovers.  The houseboat was very clean however the linens and towels could really use an upgrade.  Beware you can not use the futon for sleeping as it squeaks at the slightest movement. All in all a fun, a quirky little place in a fabulous location to see Amsterdam.

You have to see it to believe it

Me and my girl have been so fortunate to be one of the first guests since the place was renovated. The place in itself was just spot on, what an amazing job they have done and what an eye for detail. You truly step into a whole new world and I must admit that I really get to love this world. It was a surprise for my fiancee, and a surprise it was! The whole boat is decorated in a marvelous 70's design, with original lamps, vases etc. Not to mention the neighborhood. I knew this part from former visits to the city, and every time I love it more. Quite undiscovered by tourist masses and lots of cool restaurants that are no tourist traps for sure. We especially loved the Soundgarden, a laid back bar with amazing terrace and sun till late. Oh my, I hope the boat is available next time we hit Amsterdam!

    Super cozy and special houseboat

We were so happy to stay with Valkiria on her wonderful houseboat. The interior design is just awesome, with lots of eye for detail. At night we were very warm thanks to the comfortable floor heating. I can imagine this is such a warm and welcoming place during the winter days! The location is perfect with very good connection to public transport to take you to all directions of the city. But you get into town by foot just as easy. Within a few minutes you are in the hustle and bustle of the city. But at night the canal is really nice, quiet and we felt very safe. I hope the place is available when we get back here.

    Lovely time!

We had a great time in Amsterdam and loved staying on the houseboat! The houseboat was just as described and exactly what we needed for 2 people. Some mention it was small, but really it was the perfect size to sleep and get ready for the next day. Very accessible via trams from Amsterdam centraal. Walkable to any point in  the city or easy to hop on trams to get where we needed to go. The houseboat is in a very quiet part of the city, which was nice to come home to after a busy day! Could have been a bit cleaner, but otherwise very happy and satisfied with our stay!

Our stay on the houseboat was absolutely fantastic!

The booking took only a few minutes, the communication with the owner Valkiria was very friendly and professional and the boat itself, including the very nice and calm location, was perfect for our holiday.

Worth the price and nice to live there

Nice experience to live there. Coffee in the morning with ducks on the graften. No wardrobe - which was a little surprise for us but not a major problem. Very nice restaurants, morning-bars, ice-shop, bars, snacks just around the corners. Very easy living there and nice 70s atmosphere with authentic furnitures.

    Perfect Day‘s in Amsterdam

if you look for a perfect place to stay in central Amsterdam, the houseboat we use is the best. Quiet, comfortable, extraordinary equipment, enough place in- and outside on the sunroof- it will be hard to find some better. Check in and out is so easy organized, thanks for the perfect service.

Nice stay with pros and cons.

The houseboat was very nice, a bit smaller than what we thought but really comfortable, the view of the canal is unforgettable, big window are the real magic. We have not met Valkiria, but she was nice and fast to answer to our need. The house vintage touch is for sure ad added value and the taste is very nice.

Pros: incredible view almost 360°, lovely vintage touch, very comfortable bed, easy check in and check out by ourselves, nice and big shower stall with two different shower pipes (both very clean and perfectly working). tea facilities.

Cons: number on the boat is different from what stated in the houseboat description, you will see 310 not 129 and this can confuse you (at least this confused us!). Nice idea the coffee machine Nespresso but if you don't provide coffee caps (neither few) this is totally useless :( (and yes, coffee for Italians is Important!!).  Sink's size in the bathroom is smaller than your hands (probably also of your children hands ;).

    character and Geese

Lovely, clean houseboat with lots of character. It’s about a 25 minute walk into town, but it is a lovely walk, or the tram is at your door. Bed is comfortable and although the bathroom is small, the shower is amazing. Also had a family of geese great us every morning. Would highly recommend.

    That 70's boat is a 10!

    Houseboat

Our floating house was very pretty and welcoming. The point was strategic, Jordan quarter 20 minutes walk from everything. I enjoyed the retro style and the canal view, a special experience for those who do not live in amsterdam.

There are small improvements to be made, such as the dust in the apartment, the 3 green towels stained with yellow, or the stains under the toilet that at first glance look like pee, and one of the 4 chairs in the living room that is not entirely stable. Overall I am satisfied it was nice to stay in this Houseboat and I would recommend it.

    Thanks for the amazing stay

We stayed here for four amazing days. The houseboat apartment has a truly unique and warm atmosphere. It was a shame that the weather was so bad, would have loved to enjoy the roof terrace. This looked really amazing, maybe next time ;-) And the location is wonderful too. Close to the Anne Frank House (get your tickets online, very very long lines) and the tram takes you to the museum square in just a few minutes. The supermarket and night store are around the corner. Loved the Sterk Delicatessen shop - over a 1000 special beers! Highly recommended.

PS you have all the privacy you want. Valkiria lives on the other side of the boat, friendly hostess!

    The best of Amsterdam

my wife and I just returned from a 3 day stay aboard “That 70’s boat” and it was a stay we will never forget. The location is wonderful both in terms of local transportation and the view. The boat itself was very clean and we felt completely at home. As an added bonus we made a few new friends when 2 swans and several ducks came over to welcome us to the neighbourhood. Highly recommended.

    Fantastic!

We were so lucky to have stayed on Valkiria's houseboat. The entire place was comfy and cozy. This was the right size for the two of us.

It was fun to watch the swans, ducks, and other fowl swim up to the windows. In my opinion we had an upgraded view due to the temporary alternate mooring location, which was only about a block from the original location.

We were in close proximity to everything we wanted. Easy walk to Anne Frank, Van Gogh, FoodHallen, and other areas of interest.

We loved the nearby shops. Three recommendations that are nearby; Moeders (food), The Kiwi (fun bar), Stach (homemade sweets).

Highly encourage you to book this houseboat if you find it avaiable for your dates of stay.

    A fun stay!

Staying aboard a houseboat while in Amsterdam was a wonderful experience!  My observations and comparisons are based on other properties we’ve rented via AirB&B, VRBO, etc.  While I have listed several negative points, our overall stay was great but wanted to give future renters my subjective feedback because I wish someone had done so previously; otherwise, expectations may be higher than they should.

    Pros:

    ·        Great location!  Quiet neighborhood – both on the street and canal side.

    ·        Loved the interior windows – you can see all the activity around the canals – the boats passing by and the ducks that make a beeline as soon as you open your windows because they’re ready for crumbs.  We even had a beautiful swan visit in the evening.

    ·        Also loved the rooftop – we enjoyed our morning coffee, a couple of ‘picnic lunches’ while watching the boats go by and waved to everyone who passed by.  The evenings are so peaceful and serene.

    ·        I enjoyed the Nespresso machine and complimentary capsules.  So much that I bought one when I got home.  There was also a supply of teas, sugar, olive oil and some basic pantry items.

    ·        Water pressure was great (toilet and shower)!  We were a bit concerned given that it’s a houseboat but no issues there.

    ·        The owner was nice as he rode his bike over to help us find the houseboat.  Oddly, contradictory to the description, the owner is male vs female.  We were confused by that but no biggie.

    Cons:

    ·        The address provided was not accurate so we ended up being dropped off on the opposite side of the canal by our Uber driver based on the information given to us.  Searching for it in the evening with two heavy luggages while it was drizzling was not a great way to start our visit.  The owner, however, was very apologetic and explained the houseboat had to be relocated due to the bridge construction – this was not included in the communication.

    ·        The photos are great but a bit deceiving because the space is smaller in person.

    ·        There are no toiletries (soap/shampoo) so plan to bring your own.  There was a small piece of used soap and empty container of a travel size shampoo left in the shower which was kinda gross.

    ·        Furniture is dated and can use an upgrade – the sofa cushions were not fluffy anymore and legs weren’t leveled so it felt like a seesaw.  The mattress is two twin sized beds made into a queen size so you can feel the crack in the middle and is sunken in the middle so don’t expect any cuddling or spooning sessions.

    ·        The only bed linen provided is a duvet with its cover.  It was warm during our stay so it would’ve been nice if they had flat sheets available.

    ·        There is no closet space.  We used the bookshelf above the bed and lived out of our suitcases for the most part.

    ·        The interior electrical lighting is minimal.  During the day, there is plenty of natural light but not much in the evening.  If you like to read, bring a book light.

    ·        The bathroom sink is super small (approx. 8”x 4”) – we ended up using the kitchen sink to brush our teeth but be careful not to bump your head on the overhead cabinets.

    RESPONSE FROM THE HOSTESS:

    Dear Mimi,

Thanks so much for your feedback. This really helps us understanding your traveler experience and we will use this to improve our service to future guests. I recall not being able to be there myself due to other obligations but my good friend was a back-up in case our guests need any assistance. This way we always ensure that we can respond to any request within minutes.

Concerning the direction: that was a clumsy mistake from my side: I accidentally copied the wrong Google Maps-link in the email, indeed giving the wrong location. I have immediately corrected this so future guests can find their way without any problems. I'm glad that my friend Juul could come over right away to guide you to the boat.

So sorry for the piece of soap that was left. This will not happen again and I'll arrange proper soap and shampoo from now on.

Concerning the furniture: this is actual mostly real vintage from the '70 and picked especially to match the interior. The Eero Saarinen tulip table and chairs are almost 50 years old, yet kind of futuristic in it's own way. At least, that's what I think - a matter of taste of course ;-)

Good point about the beds: these were disconnected by accident and I was not aware of this. I have connected them together again so new guests can cuddle all night long again. If I would have known this before I would have fixed it right away. And good suggestion to drop a sheet during hot days - will do that. Sorry for the inconvenience!

I'll have a look at the light. This is something that might indeed be extended. And the bathroom sink is small indeed - we had to make a choice between space saving in the bathroom in order to create a large rain shower (which we did, glad you liked it) or having a larger sink.

Thanks again for your feedback - this is a valuable gift!
