Houseboat summary

The interior of this unique floating apartment, on the verge of the Jordaan, is inspired by the 'space age'. A time when mankind reached for the moon, and beyond. This space exploration influenced designers around the world to create completely new furniture, concepts of living and of course... the Lava Lamp. And this is now available aboard my wonderful houseboat on one of the most charming canals of Amsterdam. Groovy baby!

Houseboat description

Important note: no smoking or drugs of any kind allowed aboard!

Once you set foot on That 70's Boat, it is like you get into a time capsule. The interior architect was given the task to create a genuine and unique experience with eye for detail. He has not failed: from the funky wall paper to every single artifact aboard, you will truly feel that you are in that funky era. We warmly invite you to surprise both yourself and your beloved one with a unique experience!

The first thing you will see in the hallway is an original stamp of the Sputnik satellite, which marked the start of The Space Age in 1957. Open the door to your apartment to enter the spacious living room with a comfortable couch, large flat-screen TV and a epic round table with bottle holes in it. From here you have a full view over the canal thanks to the large sliding window. On the side of the boat there is a wonderful floating garden with bamboo plants that create a wonderful, private and warm atmosphere inside the boat. The whole apartment has floor heating for your convenience.

On your left hand side there is the dining area with four genuine tulip chairs of the world famous designer Eero Saarinen. Designed in the late 50's, and now more popular then ever. The buffet cupboard is also vintage, contributing to the authentic experience that we want to offer. There is a Nespresso coffee maker, cooker, refrigerator and a sink, but no cooking facilities. And why would you want that? With a wide variety of great bars and restaurants within minutes walking, you will most likely have problems choosing where to eat every night.

The bedroom is a place of tranquility, a place to land and have a great night sleep. Here you also have water view, so you can watch the swans, geese and ducks swimming by right from your bedroom. We offer a high quality queen size bed. And how proud I am to have found a genuine Herda lamp from the 70's - hope you like it as much as I do!

In the bathroom, with Italian tiling and a cute porthole, there is a large rain shower, toilet, small sink and a hair dryer.

About the area where the houseboat is located, this is called 'Oud West', or in English 'Old West'. This is right next to the famous Jordaan area where you can wander for hours without getting bored a bit. Countless restaurants, bars, boutique shops and museums are waiting for you. The Anne Frank House is just 5 minutes walking away, and also the Westerpark, Museum Square and Dam Square are within walking distance. Public transport is literally around the corner, taking you to every possible corner of the city within 30 minutes.

Last but not least I want to let you know that you have access to the amazing roof terrace of 5 x 5 meters till 10 pm all year round. Without a doubt the most amazing place to sit back and relax. And one last thing that is good to know: our boat is totally drugs and smoke free, so no drugs of any kind is allowed aboard.

We hope you appreciate to go all the way with this daring design, and we look forward to welcome you aboard!

    The best of Amsterdam

my wife and I just returned from a 3 day stay aboard “That 70’s boat” and it was a stay we will never forget. The location is wonderful both in terms of local transportation and the view. The boat itself was very clean and we felt completely at home. As an added bonus we made a few new friends when 2 swans and several ducks came over to welcome us to the neighbourhood. Highly recommended.

A comfortable stay with a fantastic view. We loved the location and the large windows that allowed us to feel so relaxed as we sat and watched the swans, birds and boats go by. Check-in was easy. Check-out as well. Would highly recommend!

    A fun stay!

Staying aboard a houseboat while in Amsterdam was a wonderful experience!  My observations and comparisons are based on other properties we’ve rented via AirB&B, VRBO, etc.  While I have listed several negative points, our overall stay was great but wanted to give future renters my subjective feedback because I wish someone had done so previously; otherwise, expectations may be higher than they should.

    Pros:

    ·        Great location!  Quiet neighborhood – both on the street and canal side.

    ·        Loved the interior windows – you can see all the activity around the canals – the boats passing by and the ducks that make a beeline as soon as you open your windows because they’re ready for crumbs.  We even had a beautiful swan visit in the evening.

    ·        Also loved the rooftop – we enjoyed our morning coffee, a couple of ‘picnic lunches’ while watching the boats go by and waved to everyone who passed by.  The evenings are so peaceful and serene.

    ·        I enjoyed the Nespresso machine and complimentary capsules.  So much that I bought one when I got home.  There was also a supply of teas, sugar, olive oil and some basic pantry items.

    ·        Water pressure was great (toilet and shower)!  We were a bit concerned given that it’s a houseboat but no issues there.

    ·        The owner was nice as he rode his bike over to help us find the houseboat.  Oddly, contradictory to the description, the owner is male vs female.  We were confused by that but no biggie.

    Cons:

    ·        The address provided was not accurate so we ended up being dropped off on the opposite side of the canal by our Uber driver based on the information given to us.  Searching for it in the evening with two heavy luggages while it was drizzling was not a great way to start our visit.  The owner, however, was very apologetic and explained the houseboat had to be relocated due to the bridge construction – this was not included in the communication.

    ·        The photos are great but a bit deceiving because the space is smaller in person.

    ·        There are no toiletries (soap/shampoo) so plan to bring your own.  There was a small piece of used soap and empty container of a travel size shampoo left in the shower which was kinda gross.

    ·        Furniture is dated and can use an upgrade – the sofa cushions were not fluffy anymore and legs weren’t leveled so it felt like a seesaw.  The mattress is two twin sized beds made into a queen size so you can feel the crack in the middle and is sunken in the middle so don’t expect any cuddling or spooning sessions.

    ·        The only bed linen provided is a duvet with its cover.  It was warm during our stay so it would’ve been nice if they had flat sheets available.

    ·        There is no closet space.  We used the bookshelf above the bed and lived out of our suitcases for the most part.

    ·        The interior electrical lighting is minimal.  During the day, there is plenty of natural light but not much in the evening.  If you like to read, bring a book light.

    ·        The bathroom sink is super small (approx. 8”x 4”) – we ended up using the kitchen sink to brush our teeth but be careful not to bump your head on the overhead cabinets.

    RESPONSE FROM THE HOSTESS:

    Dear Mimi,

Thanks so much for your feedback. This really helps us understanding your traveler experience and we will use this to improve our service to future guests. I recall not being able to be there myself due to other obligations but my good friend was a back-up in case our guests need any assistance. This way we always ensure that we can respond to any request within minutes.

Concerning the direction: that was a clumsy mistake from my side: I accidentally copied the wrong Google Maps-link in the email, indeed giving the wrong location. I have immediately corrected this so future guests can find their way without any problems. I'm glad that my friend Juul could come over right away to guide you to the boat.

So sorry for the piece of soap that was left. This will not happen again and I'll arrange proper soap and shampoo from now on.

Concerning the furniture: this is actual mostly real vintage from the '70 and picked especially to match the interior. The Eero Saarinen tulip table and chairs are almost 50 years old, yet kind of futuristic in it's own way. At least, that's what I think - a matter of taste of course ;-)

Good point about the beds: these were disconnected by accident and I was not aware of this. I have connected them together again so new guests can cuddle all night long again. If I would have known this before I would have fixed it right away. And good suggestion to drop a sheet during hot days - will do that. Sorry for the inconvenience!

I'll have a look at the light. This is something that might indeed be extended. And the bathroom sink is small indeed - we had to make a choice between space saving in the bathroom in order to create a large rain shower (which we did, glad you liked it) or having a larger sink.

Thanks again for your feedback - this is a valuable gift!
