Houseboat summary

Until June 1, my studio for 2 people can be rented at cost price for healthcare personnel and other professionals who help fight the Corona crisis. There is a private entrance, so contact is not necessary. The room has a kitchenette with sink, kettle, coffee maker and small fridge. Unfortunately, due to regulations, there is no cooking facilities. When applying, please state for which agency you work. If there is budget to declare overnight stays, I would like to charge a modest rate of 30 euros / night. If not, you can stay at cost price (cleaning fee).

Houseboat description

The Morning Star is a traditional freight ship, built over a century ago. Over the past year I have completely renovated her, creating a very comfortable floating home right in the middle of the city centre. The level of luxury is just like a modern apartment, but lots of original elements are still visible. The ship is moored along a wonderful quay and has a private garden where you can enjoy the amazing views all around you. This is truly unique in a crowded city such as Amsterdam!

You enter the boat via a broad stairway. Once inside you will find the large bedroom with a luxurious en-suite bathroom on your left hand side. This is a very special place with high ceilings, warm timber walls, and offers lots of privacy. This bedroom has a comfortable high quality Queen-size bed. The 2-person couch can be transformed into a sleeping couch in case the guests staying in this room want to sleep apart. Daylight can enter this room through the ceiling window.

On your right hand side of the hallway there is the large living room with an impressive original hardwood ceiling, with the original numbers written on it still clearly visible. The large couch in the lounge area is big enough for half a soccer team: a wonderful place to chill out in front of the fireplace after a long day in town.

Behind the lounge area you will find the dining corner with a rustic oak wood 6-person table and an eclectic set of chairs. Here you can enjoy a home cooked meal that is prepared in the kitchen, equipped with a 4-burner induction stove, a cooker for instant boiling water, dishwasher and an oven. I'm a hobby cook myself so you can be assured to find all the utensils you need for some proper cooking.

The second bathroom has a large rain shower, toilet and bathroom cabinet with sink, and is located at the entrance of the living room.

On the far end of the ship you will find the second bedroom, also with a very comfortable Queen-size bed and high ceilings. The ceiling window allows some nice daylight coming in if you wish. Above this bedroom you will find one of the coolest places of the whole ship: the wheelhouse. Here you will feel like a true captain, overlooking the harbor and one of the oldest streets of Amsterdam. No better place to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning for sure!

About the location: the Morning star is located in the oldest harbor of Amsterdam. You will feel the centuries of naval history when looking at the water, as well as when you look at the old warehouses behind you. Although this is very much the city centre, you are assured to have a good night rest because our area has not been discovered by the tourist masses yet. The famous Nieuwmarkt, red-light district, Central Station, Waterloo Square and Dam Square are all within minutes walking distance. Needless to say that a good place to eat is never far away!

For those who want to discover the city and the surrounding villages by bike: there is a bike rental with guided tours around the corner.

I hope to have given you the best possible impression, but don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions!

PS I do welcome families with children, but note that this is always at your own risk. Of course there is water around, and I would not advise to have young children playing on and around the ship unattended.

    Truly awesome houseboat experience

It is hard to believe that you will find such a well hidden space right in the middle of town. I have to congratulate Maarten with his amazing renovation, and the fact that he found this wonderful boat on this unique location. We - my wife and two teenage kids - spent four nights here and felt like true locals within a few hours. Although it was quite cold, it was still fantastic to sit outside and suck up the February sun with a fresh cup of coffee. The kids loved the wheelhouse, they sat there for hours just fooling around and enjoying themselves. It has been long time since they left their smartphones untouched for this long ;-)

The ship is renovated in a great, stylish way. All modern amenities are there, yet you feel the authenticity all through the boat. I loved the old tarred roof parts with the nrs written on them. The fire place was really a big plus, especially when we got out of town in the freezing cold. If we come back during a summer, this will definitely be our first choice. Hope Maarten is on holiday when we hit this amazing city again. Amsterdam, Maarten and the Morningstar: we love you!

    Unforgettable houseboat experience

Staying on this traditional ship in the city centre of Amsterdam was truly an unforgettable experience. The ship is warm and cozy and there is lots of outside space too. Could not have been any better - 5 stars only because I can't give any more ;-)

Wonderful family houseboat holiday in Amsterdam

My family (of 4) and I stayed on The Morningstar for a few days in September. We very much enjoyed staying on the ship. It’s close to the train station and also close to the city center. Maarten was really great to deal with. He was very communicative and quick to respond. While we were there, he was traveling, but he had made sure to give us a local contact’s name and number should we have any problems. The ship had more than enough room for all of us.  It was a unique and fun way to experience Amsterdam. We would definitely recommend!

    Centrally located and spacious houseboat

The Morningstar was just perfect. It’s very centrally located walking distance from everywhere. The kitchen works as charm. We loved to be able yo cook a meal ourselves.  Thanks so much!
