In January 2009, we bought the 'Dageraad' while it lay frozen in the neighborhood of Bremen. It took some weeks before the ice melted and a course could be set for the Netherlands. The ship was delivered to the Talsma wharf in Heeg, where it lay still for a year. In this period, we spent enormous energy on the design and concept of its new form and obtaining the necessary permits. We busied ourselves that year with demolition as and when it was possible, but the real work began only after the permits came in. The ship was then cut down to the maximum allowed length for its current mooring of 35 meters and fully gutted. We started with an empty hull and rebuilt from there, with full respect for the ship's form. The new construction has kept the form of a roof, steering cabin and 'kitchen'. The access to the roof deck (entrance B&B) has been renovated but kept its original form. Much thought was put into to retaining the history of this ship while maximizing the space inside.

    Lovely place to stay

A friend and I stayed with Theo and Sylvia for 3 nights in April.  This is a really lovely place to stay - the boat is beautiful and Thwo and Sylvia are amazing guests.  They were very welcoming and kind, providing us with an amazing breakfast each morning.  We are vegetarian and they were very happy to adjust accordingly.

The boat is really nice, you have your own private entrance down to a small kitchenette where breakfast is served with tea and coffee making facilities, sink, fridge and microwave.  Our room was a great size and well laid out with ensuite bathroom with full size shower and shower gel and shampoo.  The most amazing thing was the beds, they are SO comfortable.  We had the best sleep gently being rocked to sleep.

The location is about 25 minutes from Central Amsterdam but its a lovely and peaceful location with great connection links and a couple of shops, supermarkets, restaurants and cafes just 5 minutes walk away.

The only downside was the internet didn't really work during our stay - this wasn't really an issue for us but if you need reliable WiFi its something to consider - it may have just been an issue while we were there and we didn't bother to mention it as we really didn't need it.

    Response from the owner:

Dear Rachel, let me first thank you for staying with us. I'm glad to hear that you had a great time. And I'm so sorry to read in your review that the WiFi didn't work properly for you. I checked it the same evening and then it worked fine. I don't no what went wrong. Regrettably that you didn't mentioned it right away so we good fix it for you.

    Best regards,

    Sylvia

    Peaceful and relaxing houseboat

Sylvia was very helpful in giving us all the details before arriving at the boat. We were warmly welcomed by Theo, his husband. The room was super clean, one of the cleanest I have experienced. The breakfast was amazingly good and well presented. I highly recommend you to stay at their houseboat, you won't be disappointed.

    Absolutely Amazing!

I cannot say enough about these accommodations. Attention to detail...luxurious bedding, towels and decor. I have a bad back and this bed was perfect.  Sylvia and Theo provided breakfast with amazing presentation. We really appreciated the attention to our dietary needs (thank you soooo much!!!). The location was perfect! Country feels but in the city! Directions are spot on.

I'd love to return with friends!

You won't be disappointed! Cheers ;)

    Tolles Wochenende in Amsterdam

    Authentic Dutch houseboat experience

As an expat in Amsterdam, I will send all my out-of-town guests to De Dageraad from now on. I recently had to find space for visiting family, who wanted to enjoy an "authentic" Dutch experience, but something a bit different from the standard options in the crowded city center. I thought a houseboat with private deck and views over open water could do the trick. As we booked both rooms, we had the whole guest area to ourselves, which made it the perfect home-away-from-home

We had a super great time

My best friend and I spent a weekend on the boat and loved it! The hosts are super kind, flexible, helpful and caring. We got every morning an extremely nice looking and delicious breakfast. We felt very comfortable in our luxurious room and enjoyed a lot the time on deck with the great view as the boat is located in first line.

As well the way into the city was easy.

We loved our time at the boat, would definitely recommend to go there and hope to get back next year.

    Amazing stay nearby Center

We had stay on the boat for two nights - in a King's day!

We were welcomed on the board by very openhearted people.

We enjoyed our stay on boat especially when you recognised that you sleep beneath the water level :) the center is not far from the boat - about 30 min by walk through  picturesque cannal view.

The supermarket is very close to the boat.

It is very quiet and peaceful place just after the noisy and overcrowded streets in the centre .

    We highly recommended this boat!!

Thank you very much for the hospitality and warm welcome on board

    fall stay

The room was great for my friend and I.  Plenty of space and a beautiful view from our porthole.  Everything was very nice and it was great to have breakfast included!  The location is actually better than I thought as there are 2 trams that take you right into the central station or the museum district with only a 5-10 minute walk.  Very quiet and peaceful setting while still being close to the city!

    The greatest holiday ever!

An holiday at the Eco friendly houseboat Dageraad is as amazing as only a dream could be. Sylvia and Theo were so kind and welcoming, waiting for us till late in the night because of an unexpected flight delay. The houseboat, located in Zeeburg, was as described in the website, and the first impression, once "on-board", was taking our breathe away. A very loud "Wow!" was our first words. The boat has been completely renovated with the highest care for details and the environment. The room was spacious and very comfortable. We simply loved it. The view of the canal in the sunny morning while having breakfast was so romantic and picturesque. By the way, the breakfast was amazing too. Thank you so much for hosting us in your houseboat. We absolutely recommend it, and we will be definitely stay longer next time. Best regards, Federico

    Fantastic houseboat on awesome location!

We found this place by chance and it was a fantastic choice. The boat's location is awesome. On the one hand you can escape there from all hustle and bustle of Amsterdam, on the other hand, getting to the city center is very easy ( short walk to tram stop- 10 minutes and by tram -7 minutes).
