Houseboat Hendrik's Cow Ferry

Characteristic rusty and light houseboat on a superb location 3 mins from Central Station

/ 26 :

Houseboat summary

Expect the unexpected aboard this characteristic floating holiday home just 3 minutes walking from Amsterdam Central Station. In 1905 this barge was built as a genuine cow ferry in Friesland. For decades she was used to transport cattle over the long canals there. In 1942 the ship was confiscated by the Germans and after the war she was turned into a houseboat bit by bit. After this amazing journey Hendrik's Cow Ferry is now home to your host Aart who welcomes laid back guests from all over the world.

Houseboat description

Don't expect a over-designed high-end floating villa. Because it is not. So what is it then? Well, we think it is safe to say that it is a wonderful, spacious, light and bright holiday accommodation where you can enjoy the liberties of our city. Although we kindly, yet seriously, ask not to to cause any disturbance to our beloved neighbors, we do allow you to smoke aboard for one thing. Put on your favorite music, sit back and relax with your beloved ones, make plans for another exciting day in town.

You will stay on the top floor of the houseboat where you can use the kitchen (simple but convenient, with great drinkable tap water), bathroom (with shower and toilet) and the roofed terrace on the back of the ship.

There are two bunk beds, sleeping four guests in total. The front of the ship offers a large lounge area with two massive couches and the wheelhouse. Stand behind the original steering wheel and you will feel what it is like to be a true captain. This part is fully private, so no need to share with anyone (although the owner lives on the lower deck, you most likely won't even notice he's there).

The large windows let in lots of light during day time and can be blinded at night. They enable you to enjoy the amazing views over our harbor and the many historical and architectural highlights. And this is truly the unique selling point of this houseboat: the location.

You will be staying in one of the oldest harbor of Amsterdam, surrounded by many historical ships. Look through the front window of the wheelhouse and you see the wonderful Prins Hendrikkade with the majestic Amrath Hotel and the priceless bar called Pollux. Turn clockwise and you will respectively see the impressive Central Station, Double Tree Hotel (have a cocktail here!), floating Chinese restaurant Sea Palace (awesome dim-sum), the City Library (enjoy the views from the top floor), the climbing hall, bar/restaurant Hannekes Book (laid back atmosphere and large terrace), Nemo Science Museum (absolute must-visit for kids) and the Maritime Museum (with astonishing replica of the VOC-ship 'Amsterdam'). All these places are within a few minutes walking distance.

And one last note of special things to do around the boat. During the summer time you can take a refreshing dive in the water and if you're a fishing enthusiast, know that there is lots of perch and zander to be caught in the canals and harbor that surround the ship.

Please note that we don't accept bookings longer than 5 nights.

Hope to have given you the best possible and most honest description of the houseboat, but don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. Always glad to help!
