Houseboat summary

We feel privileged having our houseboat mored on a cute lake, surrounded by nature, yet with the city of Amsterdam at only 10 train minutes distance. We built our own dream boat, offering two floors with over 200 sqm living space, and during our holiday we like to share it with families and couples traveling together. Relax in your secluded garden, go swimming in the lake and enjoy the typical Dutch landscape that starts as soon as you leave the gate.

Houseboat description

We think our floating home is especially suitable for families with up to three kids (we have three daughters ourselves). Not only because of the kids friendly layout and the fact that we have enough toys to keep them happy for a loooong time, but also because of the vast amount of space both inside and outside the houseboat.

Garden on the land side

When arriving from the train station 'Halfweg-Zwanenburg' (10 min by train from Amsterdam Central Station) it is a 9 minute walk (850 m) to our houseboat. You will see that there is lots of nature in our neighborhood and you'll get in the holiday mood right away. From the dyke that keeps our backlands dry you enter our garden, dotted with lots of plants and trees and with lots of space to sit both in the sun and shade. We love our garden (400 sqm+) especially during the summer months when the outdoor life is good. On the other side of the dyke you will see the wide open fields, ditches and canals that attract a wide variety of birds.

The upper floor: large living room with open kitchen

Our houseboat is docked along the shore, offering lots of privacy. It has two floors, lots of glass to let in as much as natural light as possible and a playful shape. When entering the front door you get up the wide stairs that lead to the hallway, with a separate toilet in your right hand side, as well as a storage room with washing- and drying machine for your convenience (with this much outdoor space around you, your kids may get dirty once in a while).

Upstairs you enter the large living room with open kitchen (9x6,5 meter!), fully equipped to prepare any meal you may have in mind. In the living room there is a large dining table and chill out area with a couch and comfortable armchairs. We have chosen to only use high-end materials that last, and hope hope you like the result. The waterside windows give great view over the water. Technically you could jump right into the water but given the depth of less than 4 feet and the risk of small children falling in, we have decided to keep these windows shut. There are lots of other windows and doors that can be opened safely to let in lots of fresh air however. So a pleasant inside atmosphere is guaranteed.

The lower floor: bedrooms and bathroom

Descend to the lower floor via another wide stairway and you enter the part where you will be sleeping and enjoy our large bathroom. At the far end of the isle you find the master bedroom with a large and super comfortable double bed. From the windows you overloop the water and might see an early waterbird swimming by in the morning mist to welcome you to a brand new day.

In total we have three bedrooms for the kids, but during our holiday we use one bedroom to store our personal belongings. The good thing is that the largest kids bedroom has a cool bunkbed, and the other bedroom has a single bed that can be turned into a comfortable double bed. So there will always be a layout that suits your needs for sure.

Now the bathroom, our favorite place in our house. It is half submerged, just like the bedrooms, and offers a nice view over the garden. Here you can enjoy the large bathtub and a shower. The water is heated by gas, so you have easily access to hot water - a plus if you are on holiday with a larger family.

All lights in the isle, bathroom and master bedoom are dimmable to create the perfect atmosphere for any moment of the day.

The waterside of the houseboat

You reach the front of the houseboat via the boardwalk on the side of the houseboat. Take a plunge in the water and you will understand why we love this place so much!

Things to do nearby

The main attraction nearby is of course the city of Amsterdam, and we're sure that you know the highlights but did you know that there are lots of other things to do? Let us some cool things to see and do:

* Go walking, fishing, horseback riding, swimming, or playing golf in recreational area Spaarnwoude Houtrak, right in front of the houseboat

* Go to the beach in the charming coastal village Zandvoort or Bloemendaal aan Zee (only 20 min by train and 300 mtr walk to the beach)

* Visit the wonderful city of Haarlem (only 10 min by train)

* Visit Zaandam and the world famous windmills of the Zaanse Schans (24 min by car, or 50 min by bike and public transport)

A family houseboat, not a party boat

As our floating home is docked in a secluded lake with other people, we want to emphasize that we live in a family friendly neighborhood. That means that we are friendly to our neighbors and respect their night's rest as much as they respect ours. So please note that our houseboat is absolutely not suited for people who want to party. If we notice that you do, you will be asked to leave immediately - we're sure you understand. Only this way we can maintain a good and pleasant relationship with our neighbors.

Let us know if you have any questions!

We hope to have given the best possible impression of our houseboat, but don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. And don't hesitate to tell us something about yourself and the purpose of your stay - it is always nice to know who will be staying in our house. We look forward to hear from you!

Note: check-in / check-out times can always be discussed, do not hesitate to share your wishes.

Another note: the cleaning price of 125 euro is included in the total price, so no extra costs whatsoever.

From Amsterdam Central Station (20 min. altogether)

Take the train to 'Halfweg-Zwanenburg' (10 min.) and from there it is a walk of around 9 minutes.

Bike rental

Our area is great for biking, and having a bike makes life in The Netherlands easier and more fun. We are glad to say tat there is a bike rental near the station, called Sem Fietsen.

About the area

Our houseboat in Halfweg is located on the outskirts of the Western harbor area of Amsterdam. Although there is a lot of nautical and industrial activity found here, you will be astonished by the vast amount of natural wealth around our neighborhood. We basically live in the green recreational area called 'Spaarnwoude', famous for the outdoor activities that you can do here. Our backyard is 'super Dutch' with wide green fields (called 'polders' in Dutch), intertwined by canals and smaller ditches. This is the reason why you will see lots of (water)birds, attracted by food and water. This makes our houseboat the perfect place to enjoy a holiday where you can enjoy both the city of Amsterdam and the great outdoors.

    Wonderful stay

What a beautiful houseboat! We had a wonderful stay. The water was perfect for swimming, fab range of toys for the little one and it was clean & spacious. We loved visiting the Van Gogh & Eye film museums. Public transport links excellent- 10 minutes walk & 10 minutes train to Amsterdam Centraal. We survived the heatwave! Thank you very much for your hospitality

    Unique houseboat holiday in Amsterdam

Actually we did not want to write this review because it would decrease the chance of it being available the next time we visit Amsterdam. However, with the amount of TLC that the owners have put into it, is seems only fair to share our experience and give a big thumbs up. We live in London, and wanted to get away from it all during our spring break. Our choice for this XXL houseboat was just perfect: the place is not only very spacious but also offers an amazing interior design. The boat itself is very suitable for families and the kids will for sure like their rooms! The garden is a wonderful place to be, and it was hard to leave it to be honest. However, we wanted to enjoy the city centre of Amsterdam too - so we had to eventually. After a short walk to the station (I guess around 1/2 a mile) it is just a 10 minute ride with the train to central station. Perfect for a day trip to the city and getting back is just as easy - also later in the evening. And getting back was always a happy moment, it felt like the houseboat had been waiting for us ;-)

Thanks for having us and all the best to you and your family!

Perfect Floating House in an Ideal Location

The term houseboat does not do this property justice it is a large, spacious, well appointed house that happens to be floating in the water. You really do get the best of both worlds. On one side of the house you have the large expanse of open water along with a pontoon deck complete with small rowboat and paddle board so you can explore the water. On the other side you have a lovely garden complete with shaded areas, with a table and chairs for outdoor family meals.

It would be tempting just to stay in the house on the water or in the garden but this floating house just happens to be ideally located. In the immediate vicinity you are on the edge of acres of public open space and a nature reserve . Within approximately 800m you have the station with three trains an hour South to Amsterdam Central Station ( journey time approximately 10 min) and North to Haarlem ( journey time approximately 8 min) that is why the area is called Halfweg ( halfway between Amsterdam and Haarlem) Haarlem is ideal for those that find Amsterdam a little bit full on but still want canals waterside restaurants shops and picturesque flower lined streets. Haarlem is a bit of an undiscovered gem and only a couple of miles from the coast with its beachfront restaurants, bars and beach clubs.

Rather than taking the train the cycle paths many of which are completely separate from the roads give you the idea opportunity to get the whole family out on bikes. Either bring your own or hire some from the hire shop which is close to the station and get out on those cycle paths. Cycling with 10 and 12 year old children we could be in Haarlem within 30 minutes and on the beach in just under an hour.

Last but not least there are two very good restaurants within a 10 minute walk.

We had a fantastic family holiday in a lovely floating house in an ideal location and cannot wait to return.

Heaven on earth - superb houseboat near Amsterdam!

We visited Amsterdam early spring and stayed on this houseboat that is located just 10 minutes from Amsterdam. Very good train connection and a truly amazing surrounding. The fields around the lake are really wonderful and it is a great area to go walking and enjoy the peace and quiet after an exciting day in the city. Our girls enjoyed themselves in the garden (never thought to find so much private outside space near Amsterdam) while we could sit back and relax in the sun loungers. The houseboat itself is more like a floating villa: stylish, comfortable and super spacious for sure (hight ceilings - loved it!). And last but not least there is the water life that is ever changing, with birds swimming by, mingling and defending their territory - pretty much a Discovery nature documentary right in front of your house ;-) This really felt like the dream house for us, heaven on earth - we hope to be back one day during the summer!

What a find: so much space, so near to Amsterdam!

I was so lucky to stay on this magnificent houseboat with my wife and three kids during our holiday in March. I really wanted to show the city of Amsterdam to our two sons and daughter and share the great memories we had some years ago, before they were born. At the same time we wanted a place where they could run around without us watching them all the time. Well we found such a a place and we can only congratulate Michael for living here with his family. What a space, what a beautiful surrounding (loved going for a morning walk before we went into town) and what an amazing houseboat this is! The boat was built only a few years ago and I think all the work was really well done: great eye for detail and lots of love for the interior design. The ceilings are really super high, the kitchen is wonderful (I love cooking and enjoyed my hours here a lot!) and the bathroom is just perfect for larger families.

Going into the city takes about 20 - 25 minutes and is very easy because of the train stopping at less than 1 km distance from the boat. We rented bikes and that made it even easier to get around. Staying here felt a bit like staying in heaven, and I can imagine that staying here in the summer time is even more special.

Oh, and communication was very easy - friendly and welcoming hosts! Thanks for sharing your wonderful home with us!
