Houseboat summary

Central but tranquil, private and light home in the stern of the former cruise ship Sachsen-Anhalt. On this houseboat you'll have a living room with sofa sleeper and a separated bed studio. Plus a galley, bathroom with bathtub and a roofed terrace with fire place overlooking the pier.

Houseboat description

Welcome aboard! We have a special apartment on our former passenger vessel available. Our newly redone interior is Dutch design and will show you the quirky yet functional culture of the Netherlands. Imagine yourself at the table overlooking the bridge through our large windows (unique for a houseboat!), having breakfast at your private roofed terrace, making plans to eat out at one of the nearby restaurants or going for an architecture walk in the neighbourhood or even a swim in the water that surrounds you!

We will be in the front part of the boat, like neighbours. Just let us know if you want some inside info on the Docklands or a secret design or restaurant tip.

Here in the Eastern Docklands you'll find a combination of space and cosy atmosphere. The area was laid out at a scale for the enormous ships traveling to the Dutch East Indies, so you'll feel the most space possible in Amsterdam. Since the docklands were rebuilt as a housing area there's a café in both directions on the south facing quay within 200 meters, next to a bakery, some restaurants, interior- and bookshops, supermarkets and a park. You could stay the day for a trip through the old harbours and modern architecture.

Public transport is available within 100m from the ship. Tram 7 will take you to Leidseplein in 15 minutes, bus 43 will take you to Central Station in 10 minutes. Or try a bike?

Party: If hanging out with your friends on our ship, alcohol and/or soft drugs are your main reason to visit, we advise you to book another house. On our pier you live in between children and our neighbours are sleeping right next to you.

WiFi: We have fast wireless internet

Smoking: Smoking is allowed on the roofed terrace

Parking: Spots are available but pricy. We have a cheap solution if you need to park for a day or more. You will not need a car when visiting Amsterdam.

Sustainable energy: We make all the energy we use ourselves. A heat pump harvests energy from the outdoor temperature and warms the ship and your shower. Solar panels provide electricity. We do not use any gas or other fossil fuel / carbon based energy sources.

Boatlife: Yes you are on a boat. In windy situations you will feel some movement. Most people find this pleasurable.

Boatlife 2: Our waste disposal to the sewage system cannot take wet wipes or anything else than toilet paper.

Amenities: Your bed is made, towels are fresh. We have a blow dryer, iron, shampoo and a toothbrush if you might have forgotten them. The kitchenette has drinking water, fridge, dishwasher and basics like coffee, tea, an egg cooker and milk foamer ready for you to use. You only need to bring your personal belongings.

How to get there

From Schiphol Airport you'll need 20 minutes by taxi, or 45 minutes by train via Central Station and tram or bus to arrive at the Sachsen-Anhalt. From Central station it's a 10 minute bus ride that stops 100 meters away from our ship.

If you arrive by car, we have a special parking solution since you will most probably not use your car in Amsterdam.

Ingeborg

Hello traveller,

I am a freelancer writing about the newest and finest in architecture and design and jury member of the Dutch Design Awards. My husband Renze is a pilot, although his heart goes out to a his former job, navigating the seas. Our houseboat unites our fascinations: the passenger ship Sachsen-Anhalt that used to make day trips from the German town Magdeburg is renovated into a modern house on the water.

    Great boat

We stayed at Ingeborg's supper nice boat for Kingsday and it was brilliant.

Ingeborg was extremely helpful with directions, tips and very friendly. Communication before the trip was very good.

The boat has everything you need for a short visit to Amsterdam. It's central yet not in the middle, which is great. It's bright, comfy and the wood burner outside is fantastic.

    Great stay. Recommended!

What a houseboat, what a host

Once you have stayed at the Sachsen Anhalt, you know what love is. Love for interior design, love for hosting, love for life. Thanks Ingeborg for making our holiday unforgettable!

    Simply Serendipitous

From the moment that Ingeborg graciously accepted our last minute request, we knew we would enjoy our stay. However, no pictures or kind words could really express how perfect the houseboat was.

We received a warm and cheerful welcome from Ingeborg, whose exceptional organizational skills were evident in her detailed lists and emails on fun things to do in the area. Sachsen-Anhalt's lively exterior and tasteful decor was extremely inviting and inside was a designer's paradise with just the right amount of style and color.

We enjoyed making our meals in the large galley and then settling down to dine and listen to some of Ingeborg's and Renze's diverse music collection while looking at the sky through the large windows. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We especially enjoyed walking around the dockside, relaxing on deck by the fire and meeting Ingeborg and Renze.

We can't wait to revisit Sachsen-Anhalt and recommend to anyone seeking a wonderful mix of fun and relaxation on a large houseboat in a beautiful and quiet setting.

Quite possibly the best houseboat I ever stayed

    Esther

The short version: a beautiful spacious modern and comfortable houseboat in one of the upcoming trendy but still very residential and quiet areas of Amsterdam, with good connectivity to the bustling city centre and wonderful and helpful hosts. We absolutely loved our stay here! The longer version: This houseboat is really large and roomy. Regular houseboats can feel a bit cramped due to their limited space, but this former passenger-ship was built to carry dozens of passengers. With windows on both sides of its entire length it has gorgeous views and provides an even more spacious atmosphere. It's been modernly decorated with lots of retro quirks all around. The living room is large enough for a group of friends or family to relax without being on top of each other all the time. The little terrace with hammock is a great place to have breakfast or have drinks watching the leisure work on the boats in the small passenger-harbour next to it. You can go for a swim around the boat from the pier or visit one of the many nearby informal 'city-beaches'. (The water was a lovely 24C in July.) The kitchen has everything you'll need and have you ever experienced bathing in a bath tub on board of a slightly rocking boat? (The boat is really stable because of its size, but it does float on water itself, so it'll slightly move every now and then.) With enough restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets nearby you might even be tempted to forget about the rest of Amsterdam and just enjoy the venue. However if you do want to visit the city centre, the nearby bus/tram-stop will directly take you everywhere you need to go: a tram goes all around the city centre, providing easy access to all the tourist hot-spots and there's a bus that will drop you off at central station in 12 minutes. (From where you can take the free ferries across to even more interesting new Amsterdam areas.) Ingeborg is an excellent source for tailored destinations - whether it's the main attractions or going off the beaten track, she has lists of tips for everyone's taste!

We had a great stay at Sachsen-Anhalt. A very spacious houseboat which did not disappoint at any point. We were welcomed by the owner, who lives in the other half of the boat, and who made it feel like we were crashing for a couple of days at a friends place (and more importantly: it still felt like that when we left). A well stocked kitchen, comfy furniture, the hammock outside on our private deck, table top games to play, a CD collection, a vinyl collection that hit a nostalgic sweet spot (and of course a turntable to play them on), loads of interesting books, wifi internet, digital television and also little life savers like the mobile phone adapter (I forgot my own), it all added to the great experience that we had. Public transport is very good too. Near the boat there's a stop at which two buses and a tram halt. Central station and the inner city are equally easy to reach using this transport. If you like running, I did a few runs and it was fun! Almost no traffic and since you're on an island, it's possible to run along and across the water of the IJ. Even though you're in a big city, it didn't feel like it on these runs. Thanks Ingeborg!
