Houseboat summary

Central but tranquil, private and light home in the stern of the former cruise ship Sachsen-Anhalt. On this houseboat you'll have a living room with sofa sleeper and a separated bed studio. Plus a galley, bathroom with bathtub and a roofed terrace with fire place overlooking the pier.

Houseboat description

Welcome aboard! We have a special apartment on our former passenger vessel available. Our newly redone interior is Dutch design and will show you the quirky yet functional culture of the Netherlands. Imagine yourself at the table overlooking the bridge through our large windows (unique for a houseboat!), having breakfast at your private roofed terrace, making plans to eat out at one of the nearby restaurants or going for an architecture walk in the neighbourhood or even a swim in the water that surrounds you!

We will be in the front part of the boat, like neighbours. Just let us know if you want some inside info on the Docklands or a secret design or restaurant tip.

Here in the Eastern Docklands you'll find a combination of space and cosy atmosphere. The area was laid out at a scale for the enormous ships traveling to the Dutch East Indies, so you'll feel the most space possible in Amsterdam. Since the docklands were rebuilt as a housing area there's a café in both directions on the south facing quay within 200 meters, next to a bakery, some restaurants, interior- and bookshops, supermarkets and a park. You could stay the day for a trip through the old harbours and modern architecture.

Public transport is available within 100m from the ship. Tram 7 will take you to Leidseplein in 15 minutes, bus 43 will take you to Central Station in 10 minutes. Or try a bike?

Party: If hanging out with your friends on our ship, alcohol and/or soft drugs are your main reason to visit, we advise you to book another house. On our pier you live in between children and our neighbours are sleeping right next to you.

WiFi: We have fast wireless internet

Smoking: Smoking is allowed on the roofed terrace

Parking: Spots are available but pricy. We have a cheap solution if you need to park for a day or more. You will not need a car when visiting Amsterdam.

Sustainable energy: We make all the energy we use ourselves. A heat pump harvests energy from the outdoor temperature and warms the ship and your shower. Solar panels provide electricity. We do not use any gas or other fossil fuel / carbon based energy sources.

Boatlife: Yes you are on a boat. In windy situations you will feel some movement. Most people find this pleasurable.

Boatlife 2: Our waste disposal to the sewage system cannot take wet wipes or anything else than toilet paper.

Amenities: Your bed is made, towels are fresh. We have a blow dryer, iron, shampoo and a toothbrush if you might have forgotten them. The kitchenette has drinking water, fridge, dishwasher and basics like coffee, tea, an egg cooker and milk foamer ready for you to use. You only need to bring your personal belongings.

How to get there

From Schiphol Airport you'll need 20 minutes by taxi, or 45 minutes by train via Central Station and tram or bus to arrive at the Sachsen-Anhalt. From Central station it's a 10 minute bus ride that stops 100 meters away from our ship.

If you arrive by car, we have a special parking solution since you will most probably not use your car in Amsterdam.

    Truly fabulous experience

Staying on this houseboat was a truly fabulous experience. The decor was modern and inviting and the houseboat was very spacious for the 2 of us. Despite the cold weather outside the houseboat was warm and very comfortable, the hot bath was welcome after a day exploring Amsterdam. The area was quiet and scenic and a lovely change from the business of Amsterdam Central. It is only a short bus or tram ride into all the sights of the city though there is plenty to explore around the local area. We would love to come back in the Summer!

    Fantastic stay

We had a great time in this fantastic boat. The location was ideal - nice and quiet yet in easy reach of all the usual tourist spots by tram or bus. The boat itself was amazing - huge living area, really nicely furnished with a great kitchen and bathroom. Lots of homely features such as board games, CD/LP collection and a lovely sitting area at the back of the boat with wood burner and limitless fuel. Ingeborg was a great host - informative, there when we wanted her but but not in our faces otherwise. A great place to stay.

    Lovely stay!!

We spent three lovely nights on Ingeborg and Renzo's houseboat. It had everything you could need!! My son and I sat out on the back deck and read together for hours each night. One afternoon I even fell asleep in the hammock....SO NICE. The bathroom was great, kitchen was easy and comfortable and had everything you might need. Ingeborg greeted us and gave us a tour of the boat first along with lots of tips on things nearby. After mentioning we were headed to the north for a few days after we left the houseboat, she followed up with a great email full of insider tips and spots to see that we never would have found without her guidance! The house is full of thoughtfulness and things that make you comfortable. We would happily return the next time we are in Amsterdam!!

    Just Brilliant!

We couldn't recommend Sachsen-Anhalt more! It's perfect for a family of 5 (very rare for a houseboat) and you will feel immediately at home. It's just really cool to be in, from the retro record player, lego set and amazing deck to relax on. The houseboat is found in a residential part of Amsterdam, but not far from the centre. Having always stayed in the middle of town, we found this location much more interesting, with a fantastic vibe. We'll be back! A brilliant houseboat and a brilliant neighbourhood.
