Houseboat summary

And now something else: meet the Northern Light Boat! This brand new houseboat is designed to give you an unforgettable nautical experience in Amsterdam. It is located next to the bustling NDSM wharf, just a few minutes'walk from the free ferry to Central Station. Perfect for families and friends up to 6 people. The name of the ship refers to the northern lights that can be seen from both the roof terrace and through the window in the living room ceiling. And the boat is docked in the northern part of the city. So what's in a name!

Important note: This is not a party boat. No noise disturbance, nor use of the roof terrace is allowed after 10 pm in the port. No drugs of any kind are allowed in, on or around the boat. Please note that violation of these rules will result in you being removed from the boat and forfeiting your deposit. Sorry, but we have to be strict about this.

Houseboat description

The boat is located along the NDSM wharf, a vibrant and artistic area along the northern bank of the IJ. Here you will find many useful amenities, bars and restaurants. We highly recommend Loetje, our neighbor who officially serves the best steaks in town at his floating restaurant.

Now a little more about our boat. The main elements are light and luxurious. That's why we chose to have large windows all around the living room and even in the ceiling. This creates a very special atmosphere, with a wide view of the many ships and yachts in the marina. The view is even better from the lounge's roof terrace - a lovely place to chill out in the summer period. Just outside the marina you will find the NDSM wharf with the most energetic music and art events, trendy restaurants and bars and a good connection to the city center. The free ferry departs every few minutes and takes you to Central Station in just 7 minutes.

In total we can accommodate 6 people, quite unique for Amsterdam standards. You stay in a modern designed floating apartment. Just look at the photos for a good impression.

The boat has central heating and a boiler, powered by a small diesel engine. This is useful for short showers, but we recommend using the comfortable marina bathrooms located around the corner as the boat is equipped with a 400 liter fresh water tank. The toilet is equipped with a pump and is flushed with outboard water, so this does not affect the fresh water supply on board.

We offer free parking (very unusual for Amsterdam standards) and there is a bicycle rental where you can rent bicycles for 10 euros per day. During the warmer period we provide large cushions for the roof terrace.

Please note that our boat is not a party boat and no drugs or loud music are allowed in or on board. Also, we kindly ask that you don't make any noise after 10pm as we want to keep a good relationship with our neighbors - I'm sure you understand ;-)

And you may have seen the wheel on board - we're sorry to say we don't offer houseboat sailing trips!

How to get there

From Central Station you take the free ferry to the NDSM Wharf. This is a 7 minute boat ride, and from there it is a few minutes walking to Amsterdam Marina. You can also come by car. In that case you can use the free parking facilities around the corner, behind computerweg.

About the area

The NDSM Wharf is the cultural and musical centre of Amsterdam North. Here you can enjoy many great restaurants and bars (we provide a full list on arrival) and the city centre is just one free boat ride away. The Marina where your boat is located is changing all the time, because boats come and go. Therefor vieuws change and will never be the same as in the pictures. On boats its normal that your neighbours sometimes need to cross over your boat to get to theirs. Otherwise they have to hire a helecopter to get to their property. Be aware of that.

    Good accommodation for the price

Had a lovely stay with some friends for our 1st visit to Amsterdam, as it was end of October the boat was cold but we expected that but the hot water/heating was temperamental. Never once could we get the heating to work. One minute we had hot water, next we never. Wasn’t too much of a problem for us as we mostly used the showers in the marina building (spacious and clean enough but would advise to pack a pair of shower shoes) and we used an electric heater on the boat when needed, but one of them we couldn’t get to work.

Toilet was a big issue though, as it is NOT the toilet/shower room advertised. Toilet room is tiny and was a problem for myself and a few others as I’m 6ft tall myself. Shower again is so tiny, my arms was on both side walls when I stood in it to see for size. Disappointed in this to be honest as Marina is 4/5 min walk and isn’t always open to use another toilet. Understand it is a boat and it would be small but if I could have seen how small myself when booking, I would have chosen somewhere more suitable. Instead, I saw photos of a bathroom/shower that isn’t on this boat or the marina.

Bedrooms small but beds are comfortable. Would have also been good to know where we take rubbish, we couldn’t find any bins outside. Kitchen is fully equipped with everything you would need except an oven but there is 4 gas hobs and a microwave.

Lastly there was a boat moored right up against ours. Often knocking into ours in the bad weather, as it was so close, is this normal? The people on the boat were using our boat to get into/out theirs where we enter the boat, often with rollerblades on which are loud on the decking. They were friendly enough but if this is a normal thing it would have been good to be warned of this beforehand. This brings me to question the system in locking the door from the inside with a numbered padlock, it is extremely unsafe in an emergency, but we had no other way to lock the door at nighttime and especially with strangers climbing on/off the boat at any time we would feel unsafe to not lock it.

Would have given 5 stars if it wasn’t for the toilet/shower problem and the other boat/people.

    Unforgettable stay in Amsterdam

We stayed at this houseboat in April, and it was superb. It was really hot for the time of the year and we could sit at the roof terrace all day. The city was just on the other side of the water, for which you can take a free ferry. We knew the inner city already, but were surprised about the Northern party of Amsterdam. This is where the boat is docked and we really enjoyed the cool restaurants. You must go to PLLEK for sure, this is an super relaxed beach kind of place, but also 'Noorderlicht' was just perfect to chill out. The boat itself is very light and luxurious. Please note that there is a separate shower in the Marina, very comfortable but not on the boat itself (there is a shower, but water supply is limited since the boat is not connected to the regular water system. For us it was not a problem at all and we can only recommend staying here!

Nice boat, great location for the festival we went

It was a nice weekend. We enjoyed the stay. The boat was very clean and comfortable. Just the sun got a little problem. The temperature was above 40 degrees in the living room.

Beautiful houseboat. Myself and my husband loved the whole area- my 2 boys preferred the city!! The location of the houseboat may not suit everyone- this should be made clear prior to booking, on the initial description I think. We really enjoyed the local pizzeria and pllek. Good weather would have helped! I would book again. Enjoyed the trip. Ferry crossing  always on time etc it would be useful to have some information on local facilities on the boat for guests.  Bernie
