Welcome to Leiden, city of canals and houseboats

Staying on a houseboat in Leiden, you gently float in the core of this historical city, on the water that was the lifeblood essential to it’s founding. The canals on which you can stay in Leiden are even older then the city itself. The city was founded in the early Middle Ages along the sides of the very canals still existing today.

Historical attractions

Staying on a houseboat in Leiden, you are at walking distance of all it’s historical attractions. Just to name a few: Leiden castle De Burcht, Windmill Museum De Valk and the National Museum of Natural History. The Botanical Gardens are the oldest in the Netherlands and date back to the 16th century, as they were part of Leiden University, the oldest university in the country.

28 Kilometers of canals and 90 bridges

The historical center is not that big but has 28 kilometers of canals and almost 90 bridges. It is ideal to just take a stroll and stumble upon all the little courtyards, historical buildings, art galleries, canal side-restaurants and all the city has to offer. And of course if you get tired of walking (or if sleeping on the water in your houseboat just isn’t enough for you) there is always the possibility to take a canal cruise or hire your own boat to make a tour.

Centrally located

Bigger plans beyond the town boundaries? Leiden lies in the hart of the ‘Randstad’ and it’s only a short distance with excellent connections to other major Dutch cities such as Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. If you plan to take a trip by water, Leiden is perfectly connected to the surrounding typical Dutch countryside and many other historical cities such as Delft or even the port of Rotterdam.
