About the area

Backwater Heritage and Colonial Echoes

Alappuzha, often called the Venice of the East, is steeped in history shaped by trade, canals, and colonial ambition. Near Punnamada and the famed Finishing Point, visitors can trace the town’s maritime legacy along its lattice of waterways first developed in the 18th century. The Alappuzha Lighthouse stands as a reminder of the port’s importance during the colonial era, while the elegant Krishnapuram Palace, a short drive away, showcases classic Kerala architecture and houses remarkable mural art. Ancient temples and old churches scattered across the district reflect a long tradition of cultural harmony and spiritual devotion.

Cultural Retreats and Rainy Day Pleasures

Indoor experiences in Alappuzha offer a rich immersion into Kerala’s traditions. Ayurvedic centres around Punnamada provide authentic wellness therapies rooted in centuries old practice, making the town a noted destination for holistic healing. The Revi Karunakaran Memorial Museum displays an impressive collection of crystal, ivory, and antique artefacts, while local coir museums reveal the craftsmanship behind one of the region’s most important industries. Kathakali and classical music performances, often held in intimate venues, allow visitors to witness Kerala’s storytelling arts up close.

Life on the Water and Coastal Wanders

Outdoor life in Alappuzha revolves around its serene backwaters and golden coastline. From the Finishing Point, traditional houseboats glide through Punnamada Lake, offering unhurried journeys past palm fringed villages and paddy fields. Canoe rides through narrow canals reveal everyday life along the water’s edge. Alappuzha Beach invites long walks beside the Arabian Sea, where an old pier stretches into the surf. Cycling along quiet village roads and watching the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race on Punnamada Lake are memorable ways to engage with the local landscape.

Wetland Wildlife and Birdsong

The backwaters around Alappuzha are part of a delicate wetland ecosystem rich in birdlife and aquatic species. Migratory birds gather in the wider Kuttanad region, especially during cooler months, making it a rewarding destination for birdwatchers. Egrets, kingfishers, and herons are common sights along the canals, while the nearby Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, reachable by boat or road, shelters a variety of resident and migratory species. The tranquil waters and lush vegetation create an ever changing natural theatre that reflects the ecological richness of coastal Kerala.
