About the area

Backwater Heritage and Colonial Echoes

Alappuzha, often called the Venice of the East, is steeped in maritime history and colonial charm. Near Punnamada Lake and the Finishing Point area, visitors can trace the town’s legacy as a 19th century trading hub shaped by canal networks and coir commerce. The nearby Alappuzha Lighthouse, dating back to 1862, offers panoramic views and a glimpse into the region’s seafaring past. Mullakkal Rajarajeswari Temple reflects Kerala’s spiritual traditions, while the old canals and warehouses scattered through town quietly narrate stories of Arab and European traders who once frequented these shores.

Cultural Retreats and Indoor Pursuits

The Punnamada area is closely associated with wellness and traditional healing, making Ayurvedic therapies and yoga sessions a signature indoor activity. Cultural centers in and around Alappuzha host classical dance and music performances that introduce visitors to Kerala’s artistic heritage. The Revi Karunakaran Memorial Museum provides an engaging indoor experience with its eclectic collection of crystal, ivory, and antique artifacts. Local coir workshops also offer demonstrations that reveal the intricate craftsmanship behind one of Kerala’s most iconic cottage industries.

Life on the Waterways

Outdoor life in Alappuzha revolves around the tranquil backwaters of Vembanad Lake. From the Finishing Point, travelers can embark on houseboat cruises that glide through palm fringed canals, passing village homes and emerald paddy fields. Kayaking and canoe rides provide a closer look at daily life along the waterways. Alappuzha Beach, a short drive away, invites leisurely walks along the Arabian Sea, while cycling routes through the countryside reveal coconut groves and shimmering waterways at every turn.

Birdsong and Backwater Biodiversity

The wetlands around Punnamada Lake are rich in birdlife and aquatic ecosystems. Vembanad Lake attracts migratory species such as Siberian cranes and various herons during the cooler months, making it a rewarding destination for birdwatchers. The nearby Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, accessible by boat or road, protects mangroves and marshlands teeming with kingfishers, egrets, and darters. Beneath the lake’s surface thrives a network of fish and freshwater life that sustains both the local cuisine and the traditional livelihoods of Alappuzha’s fishing communities.
