About the area

Backwater Heritage of Alappuzha

Alappuzha, often called the Venice of the East, is woven together by a lattice of canals, lagoons, and the vast Vembanad Lake. The historic Finishing Point area marks the ceremonial end of the famed Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race, a spectacle rooted in Kerala’s centuries old water traditions. Nearby, you can explore the 19th century Alappuzha Lighthouse, offering sweeping views of the Arabian Sea, and wander through the old town where colonial era buildings reflect Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences. Ancient temples and churches scattered across the district reveal the layered cultural history of this coastal region.

Culture, Wellness and Indoor Discoveries

Alappuzha is a hub for Kerala’s classical arts and wellness traditions. Visitors can attend Kathakali dance performances and Kalaripayattu martial arts demonstrations at local cultural centers. The Revi Karunakaran Memorial Museum houses an impressive private collection of crystal, ivory, and traditional artifacts. The region is also renowned for Ayurveda, with many authentic centers offering Panchakarma therapies rooted in centuries old healing systems. Coir museums and workshops provide insight into the area’s historic coconut fiber industry, a craft that has shaped the local economy for generations.

Life on the Water and Coastal Adventures

Outdoor life in Alappuzha revolves around its tranquil backwaters. Houseboat cruises glide across Punnamada Lake and through palm fringed canals, offering a slow journey past village life and emerald paddy fields. Kayaking and canoeing allow for closer exploration of narrow waterways, while cycling along village roads reveals glimpses of daily life by the water. A short trip west leads to Alappuzha Beach, where golden sands and the historic pier create a serene setting for sunset walks and sea breezes.

Birdsong and Backwater Wildlife

The wetlands surrounding Vembanad Lake are rich in biodiversity. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, located along the lake’s edge, attracts migratory species such as Siberian cranes, herons, and egrets during the cooler months. Closer to Alappuzha, the canals and paddy fields host kingfishers, cormorants, and darters. The brackish waters support a variety of fish and crustaceans that sustain local fishing communities. The interplay of freshwater and sea creates a unique ecosystem where mangroves, water lilies, and coconut palms flourish side by side.
