About the area

Backwater Heritage and Colonial Echoes

Alappuzha, often called the Venice of the East, is woven together by a lattice of canals, lagoons and lakes that once made it a thriving trading port on the Malabar Coast. Near Punnamada Lake, the historic heart of the backwater region, visitors can trace the legacy of maritime commerce that connected Kerala to the wider world. The 19th century Alappuzha Lighthouse stands as a reminder of colonial maritime ambition, while the ornate Mullakkal Rajarajeswari Temple reflects the region’s deep spiritual roots. Traditional snake boat culture, showcased during the famed Nehru Trophy Boat Race on Punnamada Lake, is another living landmark that ties history to the present day.

Cultural Corners and Rainy Day Retreats

Indoor life in Alappuzha revolves around culture, craftsmanship and wellness. The Revi Karunakaran Memorial Museum houses an impressive collection of crystal, ivory and Tanjore paintings, offering a refined glimpse into Kerala’s artistic heritage. Local coir museums and workshops reveal the intricate process behind the region’s famous rope and mat weaving industry. Ayurvedic centres across the district provide traditional therapies rooted in centuries old healing systems, making them ideal sanctuaries during the monsoon months when the backwaters shimmer under tropical rain.

Life on the Waterways and Coastal Trails

Outdoor experiences in Alappuzha are shaped by water and sky. Houseboat cruises glide through the tranquil backwaters of Punnamada and Vembanad Lake, passing palm fringed villages and emerald paddy fields. Kayaking along narrow canals brings travellers closer to daily village life, while cycling routes trace the flat shoreline roads. Alappuzha Beach offers sea breezes and sunset views over the Arabian Sea, with its historic pier stretching into the surf. The annual snake boat races transform the lake into a theatre of rhythm and colour, celebrating Kerala’s enduring bond with its waterways.

Wetland Wonders and Birdlife of Vembanad

The wetlands surrounding Alappuzha form part of the vast Vembanad Ramsar site, one of India’s most important ecosystems. These brackish lagoons and mangrove fringes are home to kingfishers, herons, egrets and migratory ducks that arrive with the winter season. The nearby Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, accessible by boat or road, shelters cormorants and darters among its tangled mangroves. Beneath the water’s surface, traditional Chinese fishing nets and local fishing practices sustain a rich aquatic life that defines the rhythm of the backwaters.
