Houseboat description

In 2017 we bought the wreck that was on this site. We designed a new ship to live on. By the end of 2018, all permits had been obtained.

The shipyard started construction in mid-2019.

In the spring of 2020, the boat was moved to the Panamakade. By then we had already been working on the construction site for months: on the construction of pipework and floors.

In December 2020 we moved on board, the boat was far from ready. The B&B was only able to open in March 2023, finally finished.

We’ve built a dream completely sustainable, with our own hands.

We would like to welcome you so that you as well can enjoy life on the water in Amsterdam.

The houseboat is moored at the Panamakade which is in the Eastern Harbour District of Amsterdam. A former industrial area which was converted to an urban residential area in the late ‘90. It’s known for its famous urban plan. The waters are wide and in summer many people enjoy the water in different ways.

How to get there

You can get to us by public transport (and a 10 minute walk). It's including the walk 19 minutes from Central Station. Otherwise you can come by car or grab a taxi ;-)

About the area

The Eastern Harbour District used to be the cargo port of Amsterdam. In the 1990's it was transformed into a city district with a lot of housing, offices, facilities, shops and restaurants. It is world famous for its urban plan and architecture.

Nowadays it is a fairly quiet neighborhood with alternating owner-occupied and rental properties. Lots of water (of course) with matching recreation in the summer.

    Superb Show original

2 nights spent on the boat, everything was perfect: the welcome drinks, the cleanliness and comfort of the accommodation, the calm of the neighborhood... In addition, 2 bikes loaned to ride around Amsterdam, we recommend this boat!!

    Top notch room

Beautiful room inside a boat. Everything you need is there. Small bathroom, but well organized and the shower is really nice. The bed is big and super comfy. Easy communication with the owner, that is quick to answer. We had a little problem, fixed it without problems. 30/40 min walking from the center, but close to the bus/tram station. Really one if the best rooms we've had.

    perfect stay

We spent four wonderful days on Gijs' houseboat. Everything was very modern. There was even enough coffee with milk and a few drinks to last us. We didn't need the bikes, but they were there. The interior is very modern and stylish. The boat is bright. Oh, and it doesn't wobble. :) Two supermarkets are located near tram 7. There's also a bakery and a café. If you walk a little further, you'll find a great Syrian and an Indonesian restaurant. Or you can cycle there. We'd love to come back. Rose & Ralph

    perfect stay

We will be back! We had an amazing stay with amazing weather on the Sustainable Boat. Everything you need is there. Two bikes (the only right way to move in Amsterdam), a coffee machine even with coffee pots (we brought our own), fridge with some cold drinks, bed with only one blanket (if you are friends), a shower with a hair dryer, etc. If you need to park your car, Gjis will help you with some info. At last, we met Gjis shortly before departure; we felt welcomed the whole trip. Cheers

    Lovely and spacious!

We would love to come back again :) An easy and short ride into the middle of Amsterdam, but far enough removed from the craziness for a peaceful night's sleep. The place was very clean, and the amenities were perfect for a short stay. We loved feeding the duckies. The bed was soooooo comfy, and the shower was good too. We didn't realize two bikes were available to use, but that would've made it even better. We were surprised my 6 foot 5 boyfriend was able to stand up with extra headspace, so that was a nice surprise haha. It was lovely to wake up to the water and ducks, and having a storage space to leave our bags in as we had a later flight helped us immensely. One of the best places I have ever stayed.
