Houseboat summary
Independent B&B on our houseboat with your own entrance and all modern amenities. We are located on a sunny and quiet canal in the heart of Amsterdam, close to Centraal Station, Anne Frank House, The Jordaan and the Historic Canals. Your space is totally private with your own bathroom, bedroom, captain's room and wheel house. The space is centrally heated and double glazed for chilly days.
You also have access to our large pier (shared with our lovely neighbours) decorated with flowers, plants and herbs, and seating made from recycled hardwood where you can relax into the evening on warm summer nights.
Houseboat description
Your space is in an independent section of our houseboat, with private entrance and access to our private pier (shared with our neighbours) and is separate from our part of the houseboat (where we live). It features central heating, double glazed windows for extra insulation, operable windows, 3 rooms, each on its own level; the Wheel House with views out onto the water, the Captain's Room, and sweet cosy bedroom with a comfortable two-person bed.
The newly built bathroom features a corian solid surface sink, and the shower has a porthole window with a great view of the canal. Towels, extra blankets hairdryer, shampoo and bath gel are all provided!
Do be aware of the following before booking, the ceiling height is comfortable for those with a maximum height of 6ft 2 inches tall.
Also the rooms are separated by small ladder type steps, so this would be difficult for anyone with mobility issues.
Our charming and cosy houseboat is an authentic Haagenaar ship built in 1900, originally used to carry bulk goods throughout Holland and Europe. It now sits on a picturesque, sunny and quiet canal in the heart of Amsterdam, just a 5 minute walk from the beautiful historic canal district, the Jordaan neighbourhood, Haarlemmerbuurt, the 9 Streets (great shopping) and Central Station with trams, buses and the NS Train.
Only a few moments away walking or by bike from 2 of the best bio-organic markets in Amsterdam, It's a foodie's dream. It is also walking distance to several excellent restaurants including Barentz,, Wolf Atelier, Gouden Reael as well as a few local bars and café's such as Westerdok Cafe, Blaauwhooft, and many more in the nearby Jordaan neighbourbood.
Also included are:
- Some Dutch beers
- Dutch stroopwafels
- Mixed nuts
- Coffee Press and Water Kettle for Tea
- Espresso / Coffee and specialty Teas
- Wireless high-speed internet (200/20 Mbps) suitable for high-demand use
- Small bluetooth speaker
- Small Refrigerator
- Hairdryer
We are lucky to live in one of Amsterdam's nicest neighbourhoods. Our canal is wide and quiet even though it's right in the city centre. We are just a 5 minute walk to great markets, shops, cafes and restaurants. After a day of sight seeing and enjoying all that Amsterdam has to offer, it's a great place to come home to and relax while you look out onto the water.

How to get there
FROM AIRPORT BY TRAIN:
After clearing customs at Schiphol Airport, follow the signs to the train terminal area above ground. You will find a yellow ticket dispensers where you can buy your train tickets to Amsterdam Centraal Station. Just press English and follow instructions. The machines do not accept credit cards, only regular debit / Pin (I believe). Some do accept Euros, bills, and coins.
WALKING FROM CENTRAL STATION
Exit from the rear of the station on the IJ River side (IJ-Zijde on the signs). When you hit the water turn left and follow the water until you see a small Marina and some modern buildings on your right. Cross the bike lane and busy st eet (watch out for cyclists and cars) and keep going straight in between the buildings you will hit the water with a row of houseboat moored along piers. This is Westerdok.
BY CAR / PARKING
If you are coming by car, the address is: Westerdok AZ Amsterdam. To park, your best option is to reserve a spot in the parking garage (150 meters away) at IJDock via: link/en/booking/
Scroll down to Flex / 24 hour parking and select your date and time (check in time 15.00 and checkout is 11.00) and hit "reserve". If you do not reserve Parking here ahead of time, you will have to pay the full cost for parking there.
PS: Street parking is very expensive, so be sure to arrange this ahead of time.
About the area
Our neighbourhood is quiet, friendly and relaxing. Yet a stone's throw away from the best farmers markets, shops, bars and restaurants and the rest of the city center. To us it offers a great mix of both worlds.
Our island (Westerdoks-ijland) together with the other 3 Westerlijke islands is just outside the big touristic area and mostly residential, with parks and artist / creative studios and even a brew pup just a few houses down.
We believe it is the best location to experience our beautiful city.
Houseboat owner
Jake & Ayla
Hi, we are a Dutch couple (Jake is Dutch & Ayla originally American, and now proud to be dutch too). We love to travel, experience nature in all its wonder and meet new people, so having a B&B is a great way to bring the world closer to us! We were introduced to each other on a hot summer's day at a beach party at Blijburg by Jake's dog Max (who was on the planet for over 15 years) Life was never the same!
We now have Akasha, (or should I say she has us!) a sweetheart of a dog rescued from the woods in Calabria of southern Italy.
Living on the water has always been a dream for us, and in 2008 we made it a reality. We found our ship (De Hoop - The Hope) when this neighbourhood was transforming and it is the ideal mix between being close city centre and a quiet and free life on the water. Also we are so lucky to have the best neighbours and a great local community of caring people around us.
Being out in nature with our dog, cooking for and with friends as well as an appreciation for art and design are dear to us.
