Our houseboat sits on a sunny and quiet canal in the heart of Amsterdam, close to Centraal Station, Anne Frank House, The Jordaan and the Canals. Enjoy the view with a glass of wine or a Dutch beer in the steering cabin. The space is centrally heated and double glazed for chilly days. Your space is totally private with your own bathroom, bedroom, captain's room and wheel house. You also have access to outside space on our pier where you can relax into the evening on warm summer nights.
Your space is in a private section of our houseboat, with private entrance and access to our private pier (shared with our neighbors). This B&B portion of our ship is located closest to the quay and is separated from the main cabin (where we live). It features central heating, double glazed windows for extra insulation, operable windows, 3 rooms, each on its own level; the Wheel House with views out onto the water, the Captain's Room, and a sweet cozy bedroom with a comfortable two-person bed. Do be aware that the ceiling height is comfortable for those with a maximum height of 6ft 2 inches tall. You will have to duck your head in places! The newly built bathroom features a natural stone sink, and the shower has a porthole window with a great view of the canal. Towels, extra blankets hairdryer, shampoo, and bath gel are all provided!
Our charming and cozy houseboat is an authentic Haagenaar ship built in the1900, originally used to carry salt throughout Holland and Europe. It now sits on a picturesque, sunny and quiet canal in the center of Amsterdam, just a 5-minute walk from the beautiful historic canal district, the Jordaan neighborhood, Haarlemmerbuurt, the 9 Streets (great shopping) and Central Station with trams, buses, and the NS Train.
The bathroom features a natural stone sink, and the shower has a porthole window with a great view out onto the water. It also features a large private (shared with our lovely neighbors) pier decorated with flowers, plants and herbs, and seating made from recycled hardwood.
Only a few moments away walking or by bike from 2 of the best bio-organic markets in Amsterdam, it's a culinary dream. It is also walking distance to several excellent restaurants including Marius, Pikoteo, Bikkers aan de Werf as well as a few local bars and cafs such as Westerdok Cafe, Blaauwhooft, De Gouden Reael and many more in the nearby Jordaan neighbourbood. See our Guidbook section for more recommendations!

In general, we have some interaction with our guests and are here to check you in and out. We like to give our guests the space they need and endeavor to be as least intrusive as possible. That being said, if guests have questions or need anything, we are only a knock on the hatch away and we are happy to be of help.
We are lucky to live in one of Amsterdam's hippest neighborhoods. Our canal is wide and quiet even though it's right in the city center. We are just a 5-minute walk to great markets, shops, cafes, and restaurants. After a day of sightseeing and enjoying all that Amsterdam has to offer, it's a great place to come home to and relax while you look out onto the water.

How to get there
WALKING FROM CENTRAL STATION
Exit from the rear of the station on the IJ River side (IJ Zijde on the signs). When you hit the water turn left and follow the water until you see a small Marina and some modern buildings on your right. Cross the bike lane and busy street (watch out for cyclists and cars) and keep going straight in between the buildings you will hit the water with a row of houseboat moored along piers. This is Westerdok.
TAXI or UBER:
We suggest that instead of taking a taxi to take an Uber. This way you have a bit more insight in what you get charged! Taxi or Uber, from the airport it should not cost more than €50,-.
FROM AIRPORT BY TRAIN:
After clearing customs at Schiphol Airport, you will follow the signs to the train terminal area above ground. You will find a yellow ticket dispenser where you can buy your train tickets to Amsterdam Centraal Station. Just press English and follow instructions. The machines do not accept credit cards, only regular debit / Pin (I believe). Some do accept Euros, bills, and coins. Once you get to Amsterdam Centraal Station, exit from the rear of the station on the Ij River side (IJ Zijde on the signs).
From the A1, A2, A4 or A8 follow Amsterdam and merge onto the A10 (ring), take exit S102 (west). At end of exit, turn right and continue straight along through the tunnel (about 4km) until you see water on your left and right hand side. Take the 1st right in between the newer buildings and at the end of the street you will hit the water with a row of houseboat moored along piers. This is Westerdok.
You can park close by, just on the next street over at IJDock garage for under €20.- per day, but you need to reserve your spot ahead of time here:
There is paid street parking, it is €7/hour, so please ensure you pay at the little vending machines. Just enter your license plate number and pay with a debit card.
About the area
Our nieghborhood is a a stone's throw away from the best farmers markets, shops, bars and restaurants, but here it is quiet and relaxing and mostly residential. A great mix of new and historic, artists and creatives and even a brew pup just a few houses down.
Jake & Ayla
Hi we are Ayla & jake a Dutch couple (I am originally American, now proud to be dutch too). We love to travel and meet people, so having a b&b is a great way to bring the world closer to us! We were introduced to each other on a hot summer's day at a beach party at Blijburg by Jake's dog Max (who was on the planet for over 15 years) Life was never the same.
We now have Akasha, (or should I say she has us!) a sweetheart of a dog rescued from the woods in southern Italy.
Living on the water has always been a dream for us, and in 2008 we made it a reality. We found our ship (De Hoop - The Hope) when this neighbourhood was transforming and it is the ideal mix between being close city centre and a quiet life on the water. Also we are so lucky to have the best neighbours and a great local community of caring people around us. Cooking for friends and practicing yoga are dear to my heart as well as my appreciation for Dutch art and design. Jake has his own design agency in town and cycles to work. I am currently working on two MAs at the University of Amsterdam, one in philosophy, the other in English Literature and Culture.

A lovely place to stay
We really enjoyed our stay. It was great fun staying on a boat and even though it was a very easy stroll into the centre of the city, it was so quiet and peaceful.

Cozy Amsterdam Barge Experience
Ayla and Jake’s barge offers an unforgettable cozy & romantic Amsterdam experience on the water. The hosts are super friendly and make you feel so very welcome, yet allow you the privacy to make the boat feel like your own. The location is ideal in that you can reach the town center in 10 mins by foot, yet provides relief from the crowds in a nautical residential neighborhood surrounded by other canal boats & quiet. It was so pleasant to have morning coffee or afternoon wine and cheese in the wheelhouse, while watching the passing boats & ducks. Highly recommend a stay in this very special romantic hideaway!

Small but nice in a beautiful location Show originalShow original
We were spontaneously out of this beautiful houseboat. The owners weren't there for friends of the hosts. We found the facility to be very nice. Bathroom and living area were perfect. The bed is not for people with back problems. Since we are not a couple but only best friends, the bed is very small. The mattress is larger than the pad underneath and is not against the wall. The seat on the jetty is shared with two other parties. It wasn't clear to us at first, but it was nice. It was clean and very comfortable. Internet worked great. It was a wonderful break in Amsterdam, quiet in the middle of the hustle and bustle. There is nothing to complain about. If the lower room were converted into a larger bed and you had a small seating area on deck to yourself, it would be even more perfect. I can recommend it to everyone to stay a few nights here.
