Houseboat summary

We would like to welcome you on board for a unique stay in the captain's cabin of our historic ship De Hoop. Once an active cargo boat that transported goods and supplies along the Dutch waterways, De Hoop is currently enjoying her well deserved retirement and one hundredth birthday this year, in IJburg, Amsterdam's newest neighbourhood.

De Hoop is perfectly located for those who wish to experience the best of both worlds. During your stay, you’ll wake up with the serenity of the water, whilst also being just a 15 min tram ride from Amsterdam city centre, with its windy canals and huge range of cultural activities. There are also plenty of nature walks to take within the neighbourhood, in case you prefer to stay away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Good to knows

Please take into consideration that the boat needs to be entered via stairs and narrow gangway.

We as owners live on the same boat, but in a separate space with separate entrance, staying at this accommodation will be with complete privacy.

How to get there

Our boat is located in the safe and family friendly neighbourhood called IJburg. From Amsterdam Central Station you take tram 26 and you will be taken to IJburg in 15 minutes after which it is just a few minutes walk to our houseboat.

If you're travelling by car, IJburg is located a few minutes drive from the A10 Amsterdam ring road, which interconnects with a number of other major highways that can bring you to the boat from various directions across the Netherlands or beyond. You can park for €7.50 per day in a parking garage of the local supermarket, which is a five-minute walk from the boat. On the street you have to pay to park from Monday to Saturday from 9am to 7pm. Parking costs € 3.50 per hour. On Sundays, street parking in the area is free. There are also charging stations for electric cars in the area.

From Schiphol Airport, it will takes 45-50 minutes to reach the boat by train and tram which costs €6.50 each way. By car it will take you depending on the traffic between 20-25 minutes.

About the area

IJburg is a charming, safe and mostly residential neighbourhood which is especially popular for those who enjoy modern architecture and urban design. It's also a perfect location for water sports enthusiasts with options for kayaking, hiking, cycling, windsurfing and paddle boarding amongst others. The area offers a range of cafes, restaurants and bars for those looking for somewhere to enjoy a quiet drink.

During the summer there are two small local beaches including a beach club to enjoy in the summer months, as well as several nature spots where you can walk or cycle and take in the scenery.

    Wonderful Show original

My mom and I had a wonderful stay on the houseboat. We particularly liked the delicious breakfast, the design and the location. Uhuru and Lydia are great hosts - very personable and courteous, but also discreet. The description on the website matches our experience - the tram takes you to the city in 15 minutes, the architecture of the residential area is super exciting and you can quickly reach the sea. Highly recommended!

Amazing place to stay and just relax

We had unforgettable 4 nights on this beautiful boat in a peaceful area just 15 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal. We can highly recommend 'De Hoop' as one of the best alternatives compared to a hotel in town.

Thanks again to Daniela and Klaas for having us!!!

Lovely stay at a very nice boat

Loved staying at de Hoop! The captain’s quarters aren’t the biggest, but it was enough for my husband and I. Amsterdam was experiencing a heat wave during our stay, and with limited possibilities of opening windows the rooms got extremely hot. We were able to open two hatches in the roof, and with the help of the fan provided the temperature got bearable. Besides this, the boat is a gem, the area felt very safe and everything was as expected. Thank you!

    Great host and boat

We had a very enjoyable stay on De Hoop. It's a beautiful old vessel and full of character. The living space is roomy for a boat and the raised bed is very nautical. We loved the roof terrace, with its low table and chairs and party lights, for a nice sunset drink. Our host, Uhuru, was extremely helpful and charming and made a great breakfast each day that we enjoyed outside, on the table and chairs situated on the dock next to De Hoop. The nearby tram takes you into the city centre in about 10 minutes, was never too crowded and runs every 8 minutes - super convenient. A different experience to a hotel room or apartment and perfect for a stay in Amsterdam.
