Houseboat summary

A houseboat experience in the city center of Amsterdam, with boats, swans and ducks swimming by. A private apartment with roof terrace overlooking the oldest harbor in the city. Right in the city centre, a few minutes walking from Central Station, yet away from the tourist masses. Yes, you have just found the perfect place to stay for your next visit to Amsterdam!

Houseboat description

We are so lucky to live on a traditional Dutch cargo ship, built in 1911. A real grand steel lady that used to transport goods all through Europe and now found her final destination in the oldest harbor of Amsterdam. The ship is completely renovated and we have made a separate apartment aboard to host you as our appreciated guest.

We are docked on the outer side of a row of houseboats that are docked along each other. This means that you have to walk over other boats to reach your place, Amsterdam style.

The good news is that you have the most wonderful view over the water: on your far left you see the majestic Central Station, in front of you the iconic floating Chinese restaurant and amazing new architecture and on your right you see the magnificent Nemo Science Museum and the Maritime Museum. And while enjoying this view, swans, ducks and many boats will pass by. We personally think it's the best view in town - especially from the wheelhouse, that is the entrance to your apartment.

From the wheelhouse you descent to the apartment, with lots of nautical elements still preserved. The bathroom for example has to be entered through the original steel waterproof door. Also we have some nice portholes in the living room. You will be sleeping under the wheelhouse, with the chain of the steering wheel still visible above you: unique, cozy and secluded.

The many large windows let in lots of daylight and give you a perfect view over the harbor.

During your stay you can prepare a meal in your kitchen, fully equipped for your convenience. We offer a 5-stove burner, water cooker, coffee maker, microwave and fridge.

And last but not least you have access to the roof terrace. No better place to sit back and relax, making new plans for the day and experience what it's like to be a local houseboat owner!

The location is super central. From Central Station it's only a few minutes walking before you reach our harbor. This is a surprisingly quiet and relaxed area compared to the buzzing red light district, Waterloo Square and Dam Square that are just around the corner. So wherever you want to go: it's easy to get there and when getting back you are assured to find a safe haven.

Please let us know if you are arriving before or departing after the regular check-in and check-out time. In this case we will see how we can help you with this.

Look forward to welcome you aboard!

How to get there

It's only a 5-minute walk from Central Station to this houseboat. How easy can it be? Arriving by plane? Then it's only a 14 minute train ride from Schiphol Airport to the Central Station and a nice walk to the boat!

About the area

Our harbor is found right next to the Central Station and the buzzing Noordermarkt and the red light district. However, you will be surprised by the tranquility that our little safe haven has to offer. And for a good reason: we as houseboat owners really look after each other and the neighborhood. We love you to be part of our community, even if it's only for a few days.

    Little Nelly

Had a really nice stay on board Little Nelly, outstanding location and views yet really quiet. Stijn the owner is a nice guy (yes really) and very helpful. The boat is spotless and the outdoor area great. Remember you are on a boat so there will be the odd noise from pumps. The access is over other boats so you have to be careful. If you buy a detective story called 'The Harbour Master' by Daniel Pembrey it is set around the area and Little Nelly is on the front cover on the right.

    Great stay! Show original

Greatly enjoyed the stay on this beautiful, atmospheric houseboat. Unique experience to be on the water and with good weather it does not matter whether it is winter or summer. Everything was very clean and comfortable. Stijn is very friendly, understanding and helpful. We definitely recommend this place to everyone!

    Mini break

What can we say about Little Nelly, apart from it’s a wonderful boat to spend time on, and come back to after a day exploring Amsterdam, Stijn was a great host and nothing was too much trouble for him. Thoroughly recommend ♥️🇳🇱

Months ago when I was searching for a spot in Amsterdam to stay, I recall a reviewer of the Little Nelly writing that his only regret was that he didn’t stay on the boat for his entire stay. That hooked me in, and he was right. FIVE STARS all around! My stay on this houseboat was all I could want and more. From the coffee on the deck in the morning to the peaceful nights on the water, I could not imagine a more unique and memorable experience in Amsterdam. (I’m also convinced that the very gentle rocking of the water helped cradle me soundly to sleep at night). Stijn was a most gracious, thoughtful and helpful host. If you want a unique spot close to the ‘action’ of the city, but not too close, then try the Neeltje. You will not be disappointed. You will however be enchanted.
