Welcome to your stay

The Spera II is an elegant lady, built as a cement transportation ship in 1954 and now the home of your loving hosts. They have created a charming apartment behind the wheelhouse, designed to give you the best time possible. The location is quite unique: although you can reach the city centre in about 12 minutes, you will be amazed by the tranquility and the wide views all around you. Suitable for 2 to 4 guests.

Explore your stay

The houseboat apartment offers surprisingly much space, around 35 sqm in total. The owner lives in the front of the ship, but you are ensured to have all the privacy you can possibly ask for since you have a private entrance.

Via the entrance in the wheelhouse (shared space) you enter the former captains' house. This area is formed in the shape of the boat and the hight is limited to 190 cm (consider this when you are tall). In the captains' house you will find the living room  with a tv and small stereo set, a sofa bed (120 x 200 cm) and the open kitchen. The fully equiped kitchen is designed for your convenience and offers a dishwasher, stove and a microwave-oven combination.

Continue and you enter the bedroom with a double bed (130 x 200 cm) and the second bedroom with a double bed (130 x 200 cm).

In the bathroom you will find a small bath (quite exceptional on a houseboat) and a shower. All the water is heated by a modern heater so the whole family can shower without hot water running out.

The whole boat has good free wifi connection.

An absolute highlight is the great sundeck on top of the ridge, a great place to watch the ships go by en enjoy the panoramic views over the water. And last but not least: know that the ship is located in one of the most famous parts of Amsterdam when it comes to architecture. These former dockes were used to dock steam ships in the 19th century. Nowadays the steam ships and the docks have disappeard, but the nautical atmosphere s still there. Just like the many references to these long-gone days in the great bars and restaurants you will find here. And many great new buildings attract architecturalists from all all over the world.

Bus 43 takes you into the city centre in about 10 minutes.

And one more thing for those who like to swim: know that this area offers great, fresh water during the summer. Just 100 meters away is a large jetty where you can swim safely and enjoy the sun.

    Very comfortable

We were very comfortable for our stay here - it is exactly as pictured. The area the boat is located in is a little out of the city centre, but there are conveniently located bus stops and a small shopping arcade nearby. There is a small choice of cafes within walking distance, or at least one or two bus stops. One thing to think about - there are very steep, almost ladder-like steps to access the cabin area. If you have even slight mobility issues it would be worth checking with Ira first to make sure you will be able to access. Also, if you are very tall you might not be as comfortable as we were (we are all quite small!). I really like the area - it was nice to have somewhere quiet to come back to, and the cabin was cosy. Highly recommended!

    Hello IraShow original

    Hello Ira,

We really enjoyed it on the boat. The location is quiet and outside the city, but easy to reach thanks to the 48 bus. The decor is nice, bathroom and kitchen well equipped. We slept well. If this boat were on the Amstel, so within walking distance of the center, it would be super optimal, but we'd love to come back and I'll pass the address on to friends.

Many greetings from North Rhine-Westphalia Gabriele and Elvira

    Relaxation on canal vacation

Surrounded by water, birds and boats this was the perfect scenery for a relaxing stay in Amsterdam. Ira and Stephen are the greatest hosts. Always helpful with recommendations, and asking if we needed anything. Even if we needed a bicycle pump, or toilet paper at 11PM - they came to the rescue. Our part of the boat was as cozy as the picture shows, just a tiny bit smaller.

The kitchen is ok equipped. The bathroom gets a big plus for the comfortable bath tub. But the crown jewel, the best part of the boat, was the sun deck. And we were lucky to gather loads of sun on it too. Temperatures between 25 - 29 degrees Celsius in the middle of June. We were allowed to jump right off the boat and cool down in the canal. On our way back to the climbing ladder we swam past the neighbor chicken to say hello. Crazy awesome.

The neighborhood consists of interesting architecture and remarkable bridges, which the local kids use as their ramp to perform dare devil jumps into the canal. Just 2 minutes down the street of the Borneokade you will find a decent restaurant, the Eetcafé Oceaan. Sometimes they have live music, the staff is nice, and the ribs there are really juicy.

We recommend you renting bicycles for transportation. For example at Fietstop placed 12 minutes by walk towards the city. A bike ride to Central Station takes just 10 minutes. As constructive feedback we would like to make a note on the amount of plates and glasses in the kitchen cupboard. Unfortunately there were not too many of them, so we had to wash the dishes every day. We would also kindly recommend clarifying the key/locking routine as it was a bit confusing with multiple people sharing the entrance. In addition we would sadly say that we had a bit of a struggle with unavailability and late respons pre check-in, but fortunately it all worked out. All in all we had an amazing floating holiday, and would happily be coming back. For the most cozy and relaxing experience, in perfect biking distance to the city center, we would highly recommend the joy of Spera II.
