Houseboat summary

The Spera II is an elegant lady, built as a cement transportation ship in 1954 and now the home of your loving hosts. They have created a charming apartment under the wheelhouse, designed to give you the best time possible. The location is quite unique: although you can reach the city centre in about 15 minutes, you will be amazed by the tranquility and the wide views all around you. Suitable for 2 to 4 guests. On request we provide breakfast and bikes.

Houseboat description

The houseboat apartment offers surprisingly much space, around 35 sqm in total. The owner lives in the front of the ship, but you are ensured to have all the privacy you can possibly ask for since you have a private entrance.

Via the entrance in the wheelhouse (shared space) you enter the former captains' house. This area is formed in the shpe of the boat and the hight is limited to 190 cm (consider this when you are tall). In the captains' house you will find the living room  with a tv and small stereo set, a sofa bed (120 x 200 cm) and the open kitchen. The fully equiped kitchen is designed for your convenience and offers a dishwasher, stove and a microwave-oven combination.

Continue and you enter the bedroom with a double bed (130 x 200 cm) and the second bedroom with a single bed (90 x 200 cm).

In the bathroom you will find a small bath (quite exceptional on a houseboat) and a shower. All the water is heated by a modern heater so the whole family can shower without hot water running out.

The whole boat has good free wifi connection.

An absolute highlight is the great sundeck on top of the ridge, a great place to watch the ships go by en enjoy the panoramic views over the water. And last but not least: know that the ship is located in one of the most famous parts of Amsterdam when it comes to architecture. These former dockes were used to dock steam ships in the 19th century. Nowadays the steam ships and the docks have disappeard, but the nautical atmosphere s still there. Just like the many references to these long-gone days in the great bars and restaurants you will find here. And many great new buildings attract architecturalists from all all over the world.

On request bikes and breakfast can be arranged for you. Bus 48 takes you into the city centre in about 10 minutes.

And one more thing for those who like to swim: know that this area offers great, fresh water during the summer. Just 100 meters away is a large jetty where you can swim safely and enjoy the sun.

    Very comfortable

We were very comfortable for our stay here - it is exactly as pictured. The area the boat is located in is a little out of the city centre, but there are conveniently located bus stops and a small shopping arcade nearby. There is a small choice of cafes within walking distance, or at least one or two bus stops. One thing to think about - there are very steep, almost ladder-like steps to access the cabin area. If you have even slight mobility issues it would be worth checking with Ira first to make sure you will be able to access. Also, if you are very tall you might not be as comfortable as we were (we are all quite small!). I really like the area - it was nice to have somewhere quiet to come back to, and the cabin was cosy. Highly recommended!

    Quiet family-friendly neighbourhood.

We rented Spera II for 6 nights for our family of two parents and two teenage boys. It was a bit of a tight squeeze, but only because we had one boy in the living room, and teenagers take up quite a bit of space.

The apartment is well appointed and cozy, it's a great quiet retreat from Amsterdam, which is a very busy city. It's a short bus ride from two excellent museums, the science museum and the shipping museum. As well as a short trip away from Dapperstraat which has the Zoo, the Dapperstraat market and the Museum of the Resistance. We loved staying there and appreciated that it was a charming family friendly neighborhood.

Thanks so much to Ira for hosting such a great B&B.

Very nice stay on the channel

We stayed for 4 nights and enjoyed it very much. Ira is a very nice host, who gave us good advice about the places to visit. The boat was very comfortable for 4 people. There is everything for cooking, so we enjoyed our breakfasts in the living room.  Beds are comfortable, the bathroom is very neat and clean. The neighborhood is very nice and it's quite convenient to go to the center by bus which is nearby and goes every 15 minutes.  I highly recommend this houseboat for your stay, it's a very different experience from living in the hotel.

    Wonderful Stay!!

Wonderful stay. Host was very kind and the accommodations were very clean. They have bikes you can use to get around OR it is about a 10 minute walk to the tram that can take you anywhere in the city. There is also wifi on the boat.

    What an amazing place

The boat was very nice in a quite place, not so far from downtown. 10 minutes by bus number 48. 12 minutes by bikes.

We loved to drink beers and eat good ribs at the pub Ocean.

Unfortunately, we didn't swim but we hope to do it next time.

    Thank you Ira.

    Friendly boat

The owner was very friendly, helpful and let us lend bicycles.

The general standard is modest, but the boat is cosy. The bathroom is very clean. The beds are okay but the sofabed is uncomfortable to sleep in. The entrance smells of tobacco but that is easily solved by closing the opening. The boat does move a little, of course, so not a place for anyone who gets seasick easily.

     The street is very quiet.

We had a great stay in Amsterdam, and sleeping on a boat was nice experience

    Nice stay in Amsterdam Summer

We were on the boat for 6 nights during a hot summer and it was great. Possibility to take a bath in the water close to the ship, only a short distance to the next bus (we recommend a several day ticket), easy shopping at the JUMBO  or AH Market round the corner (15 min walk). We cooked and relaxed on the sun deck in the evening. We had a great stay, thanks.

    Comfortable and Convenient

We had a lovely stay of 8 days aboard this boat.  It had all the amenities that we required and the hosts were pleasant,  helpful, quiet and friendly. We had a small problem with a slow draining sink which was quickly attended to. The boat is a few minutes walk to a bus that takes you to Amsterdam Central Station in less than 15 minutes. We ate at both of the restaurants within a block or two of the boat and enjoyed our meals.  This property is priced well and we are very happy with our choice.  Thank you to our very nice hosts!

We were a family of five, 4 adults and 1 baby, and we had the most wonderful staying at this boat house. The owner was very friendly and thoughtful, provided us with a crib for the baby and sheets and blankets and was always available if we needed anything else. The boat was very comfortable and had everything you need for everyday life. The area where it stays is very calm and beautiful and has everything close by, supermarket or tram line. We used Uber to move around and for us it was the best way.

I’m rating 5 stars for the boat and 6 stars to the owner, Mrs Ira, for providing us with such a pleasant stay.

    Thank you!

Stay on the ancillary boat next to the Spera Boat

Following a mistake from the owners of the boat, we finally stayed on the smalll boat next to the Spera.

Despite a lack of comfort and a lack of hot water , we had a nice stay of 2 nights on this boat with our friends !

The owners are lovey people and we received a heartwarming welcome!!

The boat is situated next to the center of Amsterdam and it is very easy to take the bus to go to the center.  The bus stop is a few minutes apart from the boat.

The surroundings are pretty and quiet!

    Lovely accommodation and great location

This was a perfect spot for my adult daughter and I to spend our holiday in Amsterdam. The suite is very comfortable and has everything you could need (except soap - make sure you bring your own). The suite doesn't have any way to lock it (the outer door locks, but not the interior) so we did end up having someone accidentally come in during the night. It didn't put us off the place though. It is comfortable, easy to get to by bus (15 minutes directly to Central Station) in a nice quiet area. Loved it and would rent it again.

Vielen Dank liebe Ira!!!

Beautiful houseboat in a quiet and convenient location.

We had a wonderful stay on the Spera II. The accommodations were clean, bright, and well equipped. In fact, the entire boat shows a level of upkeep that is impressive to say the least. It was very nice to have our own kitchen to prepare our own fresh breakfast. The boat is on a quiet residential street with convenient transit (every 15 minutes!) to central station and all of the city sights. There are two small parks nearby as well as two very good grocery stores and a number of restaurants and cafes that serve the local residents, refreshingly far away from the tourist traps in town. I cannot think of a better place to rest after a day of enjoying all that Amsterdam has to offer.

Be aware that since it is a real boat, getting in and out of the cabin requires going up & down a handful of very steep steps, similar to a ladder. It was not a problem for us, but might present a challenge to those with physical limitations.

Overal we were thrilled to be able to simple a bit of a very special lifestyle and Ira was a fantastic host!

    Nice houseboat studio

Spera II is in a quiet location away from the busy city centre. We were not disturbed at all during the night. Getting into town and back is easy because the bus runs from Centraal to a stop 4 mins walk from the boat. You can also borrow bikes from the owner. It's 35 mins if you walk. The accommodation is basically one room with two small berths (one a double, one a single). If there are 4 of you then you'll need to use the sofa bed which is not very comfortable. Be aware that the room is much smaller than it looks in the photos which is a bit disappointing when you see the huge length of the boat. The owners live in the rest of the boat although we did not meet them during our stay. You are basically renting the old crew cabin behind the wheelhouse so it is quite small. TV and wifi good. Very clean and tidy. Nothing in fridge so bring milk etc when you arrive. Overall, a good choice if you want a houseboat away from the busy centre of Amsterdam.

An authentic Amsterdam experience on the Spera II

We were pleased to begin our family’s European adventure with a stay on the houseboat Spera II.   We wanted to experience Amsterdam from the water and all that the community around it had to offer.  The space was fun and my kids enjoyed bunking in the stern of what once was a working vessel navigating these waters.  We really enjoyed walking the various neighborhoods nearby, looking at the other boats and being with other families at play off the beaten tourist path.  An excellent deli with lots of hot local specialties and excellent wine and cheese selection is within easy walking distance, as is a fully-stocked grocery and access to public transportation.  If you want to rent bikes – the perfect way to see Amsterdam – that’s nearby, too.

Nice and confortable place to stay

We found Ira’s houseboat very comfortable and it had everything we needed for our stay. The location is nice and easy to move on bike around Amsterdam. We accidentally locked the keys inside the boat and Ira was very helpful even not being there. We certainly recommend Spera II! I would say that only the cleaning could be better.
