ABOUT THE BOAT,

A 26 meter traditional wooden houseboat : Private Houseboat  Bangladesh | Authentic Brahmaputra to Barisal River Expedition

Our journey begins where the mighty Brahmaputra River enters Bangladesh at the northern border and ends at the famous floating markets of Barisal. This is the full north to south expedition.

This is not a luxury cruise ship. It is a real, traditional, 26 meter long wooden country boat converted into a private floating lodge for true explorers. Built by local craftsmen, it is rustic, strong, and close to nature.

Layout & Comfort

  • Bedroom: One large private room exclusively for your group. We can accommodate up to 6 single beds upon request. Want more space? We can reduce the number of beds to create a large, open living space inside, just tell us. It is perfect for couples, friends, and photographers who want space.

  • Bathroom: Adjacent to the bedroom is a private toilet and bathroom for guests only.

  • Front Deck: An open space at the front where you can sit, read, and watch village life pass by.

  • Rooftop: This is where the magic happens. Most guests spend all day on the roof of the boat, sitting on cushions and enjoying 360 degree views of the Brahmaputra, Jamuna, and Padma Rivers. Sunrises and sunsets from the roof are unforgettable.

  • Kitchen & Engine: Just behind the bathroom are the engine room and our small kitchen. This is the heart of the boat.

How We Travel, Truly Local

When we cruise, we live from the river.

We stop at remote villages to buy fresh vegetables directly from farmers. We meet thousands of fishermen who make a living on the river, and we buy fresh fish straight from their nets. We also buy fresh milk, eggs, and rice from nearby local markets.

We cook traditional, authentic Bengali food for our guests, using ingredients collected from local people and prepared fresh every day. No supermarkets, no frozen food.

Technical Details, Simple & Sustainable

The boat is powered by a single cylinder, 25 HP engine that is reliable and quiet on the river. A built in alternator recharges a 200W battery system for nighttime lighting and for recharging your cameras, phones, and other electronics.

Between the kitchen and the bedroom is the toilet system for guests.

Crew & Inclusions

You will be accompanied by 3 local crew members and an expert English speaking guide, Towfiqul Ahmed, who has been guiding on the Brahmaputra since 2006. Our crew navigates, cooks, and takes care of everything.

Our price is all inclusive:

  • Food

  • Accommodation on the boat

  • Transfers, including the train from Dhaka to Kurigram and the return journey

About Our Boats: A Flexible Fleet for Solo Travellers and Groups

We normally use one traditional wooden houseboat, 26 meters in length, which can comfortably accommodate up to 6 people. This is our standard private charter.

If your group is larger, we use two or three boats together, depending on the number of guests. Whether you are travelling solo, as a couple, or with a larger group, we can adapt.

We can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests when we use all three boats.

Each boat is 26 meters long and has a solid natural bamboo cover over the central section. The cover is approximately 6 meters wide and provides shade and shelter.

Boat Options

  • 1 Boat: Standard Private Charter, Up to 6 Guests

Our classic houseboat has one room with up to 6 single beds available on request. If you prefer, we can reduce the number of beds to increase the interior living space. Adjacent to the bedroom is a combined toilet and bathroom. Behind it are the engine room and kitchen. There is an open seating area at the front, and most guests enjoy the river views from the roof. It is private, rustic, and comfortable.

  • 2 or 3 Boats: For Larger Groups

    1. Boat No. 1, the Mother Boat: When we use three boats, the Mother Boat is used exclusively for seating, dining, and as a shared living area. It is equipped with a galley, dining space, and a small bathroom with a shower, sink, and toilet.

    2. Boat No. 2: Equipped with 2 sleeping spaces with 2 beds each, for a total of 4 beds, as well as an area for galley support.

    3. Boat No. 3: Equipped with 3 sleeping spaces with 2 beds each, for a total of 6 beds.

Life on the River

The only bathroom is on the Mother Boat. During navigation, the boats come alongside one another to allow all guests to use it. At night, the boats are moored along the shore.

The water of the Brahmaputra is clean and pleasant for bathing. The sleeping spaces are simple and functional, separated by fabric curtains or bamboo mats. The beds are single and comfortable, with sheets provided.

Food, Crew, and Guide

A skilled cook is on board and can prepare dishes adapted to Western tastes, using fresh fish from local fishermen, vegetables from nearby villages, and essential ingredients from local markets.

Three crew members accompany you, along with expert guide Towfiqul Ahmed, who has been guiding Brahmaputra expeditions since 2006.

Location

About the area

Bangladesh, a land crisscrossed by over 700 rivers and numerous canals, provides a unique and fascinating boating experience. It's not just a mode of transport; it's a way of life, deeply intertwined with the culture and livelihood of the people.

Houseboating, in particular, has been gaining popularity among travelers seeking to explore the enchanting waterways of Bangladesh. The appeal lies not only in the serene and picturesque landscapes that you traverse, but also in the immersive experience of the local lifestyle.

On a typical houseboat journey, you navigate through tranquil waterways, passing lush green paddy fields, centuries-old temples, and bustling local markets. One of the notable routes is along the Brahmaputra River, which allows you to witness the captivating beauty of Bangladesh's countryside and its vibrant rural life.

Houseboats in Bangladesh are traditional wooden vessels, known as "Nouka", that have been modified to provide modern comforts. They usually come with a crew who navigates, cooks, and ensures that your journey is comfortable and enjoyable. Aboard, you'll find cozy sleeping quarters, a well-equipped kitchen, and often a viewing deck - perfect for bird watching, photographing the sunset, or simply enjoying the passing scenery.

Furthermore, houseboating also offers unique wildlife experiences. The Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest mangrove forest in the world, is an essential visit for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. Navigating the forest's intricate network of waterways on a houseboat, you may encounter rare species such as the Bengal tiger, Ganges dolphins, and saltwater crocodiles, to name a few.

With houseboating, the journey is indeed as rewarding as the destination. It is a truly special way to connect with Bangladesh's rich cultural heritage, extraordinary landscapes, and diverse wildlife. Whether you're an adventure seeker, a nature lover, or a culture enthusiast, houseboating in Bangladesh offers an unforgettable travel experience.

Towfiqul Ahmed - River Expedition Leader & Guide Since 2006

A dedicated travel guide and river expedition leader from Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Since 2006, I have specialized in crafting deeply authentic and immersive travel experiences across Bangladesh, focusing on the great rivers - Brahmaputra, Jamuna and Padma - from Kurigram where the river enters the country in the north, down to Barisal and the floating markets in the south.

My philosophy is Community Ecotourism. I believe the best travel is defined by genuine "people meet with people" connections. Not sightseeing from a distance, but sitting with a fishing family, walking through a char island village, and sharing a cup of tea in a rural market.

I focus on three things:

1. Immersive Cultural Travel
Village homestays, char island communities, fishing families, timber floating markets, weaving villages and close engagement with local people far from any tourist routes.

2. Adventure & Nature
Leading multi-day trekking in the hills and forests, and my signature experience - unique private river safaris living 4 to 21 days on our traditional 26-meter wooden houseboat. River swimming, village walks, and sunsets on a 360-degree rooftop deck.

3. Historical Exploration
Village life, living rural traditions, and the hidden archaeological sites of the Bengal Delta.

Based in Dhaka, I personally accompany every trip - from Dhaka to Dhaka - with my small local crew. I handle all logistics to ensure a safe, seamless and authentically local journey: private cars, local buses, scenic trains, and traditional wooden boats. Including FREE airport pick-up and drop.

Trusted by photographers, researchers, documentary crews and travelers seeking the real Bangladesh since 2006.

Welcome aboard. Let me show you my river.

    Boat trip in Bangladesh

I went to Bangladesh in order to live and discover the country and I can easily say that it was amazing. I visited most of the country by road trip and I also the chance to navigate the Brahmaputra river on a boat with Waterways tour. A great experience that I would reccomend to anyone.
