Houseboat summary

The Kerala backwaters is the rather unappealing name given to the peaceful and picturesque palm-lined network of lagoons, lakes, rivers, and canals that run inland from the coast of Kerala. The main entry point, situated between Kochi and Kollam, is Alleppey (Alappuzha). At the heart of the backwaters is vast Vembanad Lake.

Traditionally, the backwaters are used by locals for transport, fishing, and agriculture. Annual snake boat races, held along the backwaters, also provide a great source of entertainment for the locals and tourists alike. The lush green landscape, diverse wildlife, and houses and villages that line the backwaters make a journey along these waterways seem like a journey through another world. No wonder the backwaters is one of the must-visit tourist places in Kerala.

Houseboat description

Hiring a traditional thatched Kerala houseboat and exploring the backwaters is one of the top things to do in Kerala. The majority of houseboats are hired from Alleppey & Kumarakom, the prominent  tourist places in the backwaters in between Kochi and Kollam. Houseboats will usually slowly travel a distance of around 40-50 kilometers (25-30 miles) through the backwaters each day, so you'll get to see lots of different scenery. Houseboats range from basic to luxurious, with one bedroom, 2 bedrooms or 3 bedrooms etc.

We have different types of houseboats, based on the passenger capacity. Our 1-bedroom houseboat has one air-conditioned bedroom (with attached toilet) and with double beds meant for 2 people. Also there is living cum dining area (open to 3 sides), kitchen etc.

Likewise there are 2-bedroom houseboat (for 4 people), 3-bedroom houseboat (for 6 people). And other features (living cum dining area, toilets, kitchen etc.) are same with all type of houseboats.

Overnight Houseboat Trip in the Backwaters of Kerala

I have never been on such a boat in such an beautiful environment! It was for both of us an amazing experience - the boat spacious, the scenery just so beautiful. The cooked prepared very delicious meals!! I can only highly recommend this experience to every one whom is interested. The evening we did meet some dogs, they seemed happy that we shared our food with them.

Beautiful scenery, attentive staff and good value

Our group was booked relatively last minute, and composed of 7 people. From the moment the owner's driver picked us up on the first day, we had great service and provided with a great experience. The houseboat was beautiful and the backwaters route taken was also breathtaking. The food is also a great treat, giving you a chance to eat delicious Kerala foods and famous seafood. We had chai, fried bananas and a wonderful breakfast. We never went hungry!! The beds were comfortable and the rooms were clean.

Recommended that you bring snacks and lots of books and cards, board games etc for passing the time and at night when the boat anchors. Also, alcohol isn't available on the boat, so if you want it, you much purchase it in advance.

Overall, the owner Kence and his driver are excellent support and provide a great weekend experience!

Beautiful experience that we won’t forget

We loved our stay on the houseboat. Kence welcomed us and gave us a nice introduction. We were then left in the very capable hands of an excellent chef and driver. The boat was very comfortable and spacious for the two of us. It’s a very tranquil experience with plenty of birds and wildlife to see. Thank you for a great stay!
