Houseboat summary

Situated in the rural outskirts of Amsterdam this unique Riverside Studio allows you to experience the best of both worlds. Spend the day in the bustling capital Amsterdam, and come home to the tranquillity of the wide open polders, with iconic farms, windmills, geese, herons and storks.

Or add one or two nights to your city stay to come and relax and see the beautiful historical 'summer houses' (mansions!!) that were built along the river Vecht by the wealthy 17th century Amsterdam merchants who considered it their back garden!

Upon entering your Riverside Studio, you literally leave the world behind and step into the placid rhythms of river life. Swans, geese, moorhens, jumping fish, storks, herons, ducks, of course, and many other river dwelling creatures rapidly become your new neighbours.

From May to August we share the river with small pleasure craft and day trippers, that make for a colourful summer pageant. But for the rest of the year, the river is ours. We're located on the riverbend between the picturesque historical village of Vreeland and the more practical village of Nederhorst den Berg. As you can see from the video, this offers sweeping river views south, east and west!

Located 20 minutes by car from Amsterdam, 30 minutes from Utrecht. Free parking directly in front on the houseboat. The Riverside Studio can also be reached by public transport by taking a bus from our village to the town of Weesp, and then a train to Amsterdam (45 minutes). The bus does not run on Sundays or holidays. Use the NS journey planner to be found on the NS website, to make your own assessment of distances. (Local bus stop: Nederhorst den Berg - Overmeer)

Houseboat description

This 21sqm self contained studio apartment has its own entrance, kitchenette, bathroom, and outside terrace. There is proper sound isolation between the Riverside Studio and the Captain's Quarters to ensure total privacy.

The high ceiling and the sliding door to your private terrace, as well as a large side window that gives you a unique 'breakfast in bed' view of the river, make the studio feel spacious and light. Imagine waking up to gentle birdsong and watching the gentle river flow by, right at your feet.

The smart studio has been cleverly designed with the popular tiny houses concept in mind. Everything folds, in, out or up, and the kitchenette is neatly tucked away in a cupboard. This allows you to make optimal use of the space. And you can leave your slippers at home, because there is floor heating throughout.

The kitchenette is equipped with a microwave and two electric cooking rings. The fridge is big enough for a three-day food shop.

EXTRA: I am an experienced counsellor and psychotherapist. So feel free to enquire about booking some counselling or creative coaching sessions during your stay. Residents of the studio enjoy a 10% discount on regular counselling fees.

1 Bedroom, 2 Sleeps

Number of double beds: 1

BED: The 140cm bed easily folds away during the day and is of the highest quality, with a luxurious bamboo mattress that will give even the most sensitive sleeper a good nights sleep.

BATHROOM: The bathroom has a large shower area, with both an overhead and a hand shower. In addition, there is a toilet, hand basin, mirror and shelf for toiletries, as well as a small storage unit under the sink.

Note: How can a folding bed be comfortable?

During the design phase of the studio I insisted on splashing out on a 'bed-cupboard' that would enhance the experience of staying in the studio, rather than impede it! In its first year of operation, many guests complimented me on the comfort of the bed and the excellent quality of their sleep.

For couples, the width of the bed, 140cm, should be taken into consideration. Having said that, the couples who have slept there the past years have been quite cosy and happy to snuggle up.

Bus 106 from Weesp and/or Hilversum. For correct times, check the travel planner on Sadly the bus no longer runs on Sunday. The bus stop you want is Nederhorst den Berg, OVERMEER.When you come out of the bus, look for the pizza restaurant, and then, keeping that on your left, walk to the junction with the white restaurant (now for sale), turn left onto Vreelandseweg, and keep walking until you see the orange houseboat, the very last one of all the houseboats. It's no more than a 5 minute walk.

From the A2:Come off at the Vinkeveen junction, then follow the signs for Hilversum, N201. After about 9km you come to a roundabout and there you go left (2nd exit). Look out for the windmill on your right. You drive another 2 mins (1.3 km) you turn right over the white bride and the IMMEDIATELY left, following the river on your left. You will already see the orange houseboat with the riverside studio on your left up ahead. You can park in from of the door.

From the A1: At junction 10 on the A1, follow the signs for A27 Hilversum. Take exit 33 to Hilversum. Turn left into Diependaalselaan, a road with lots of roundabouts. At the final roundabout you go straight ahead (2nd exit) where it becomes the N201. After this there will be two sets of traffic lights, and finally another roundabout. There you take the 1st exit (right).Look out for the windmill on your right. You drive another 2 mins (1.3 km) you turn right over the white bride and the IMMEDIATELY left, following the river on your left. You will already see the orange houseboat with the riverside studio on your left up ahead. You can park in from of the door.

How to get there

The houseboat is located about fifteen minutes by taxi from Weesp and/or Hilversum railway stations. Bus 106 has an hourly service from both stations to Nederhorst den Berg, with the local bus stop about 5 minutes away.

Access by car from the A2 motorway (exit Vinkeveen), or the A1 motorway (exit Weesp), or the A27 (exit Hilversum). From each exit a final 15-20 minute drive through the beautiful watery polder landscape.

About the area

The Gooi and Vecht region truly offers the best of both worlds. You have easy access by car to Amsterdam and Utrecht as well as the airport Schiphol.

However, situated as it is on the border between the turf and clay delta, 2m under sea level, and the sandy high ground, just 7 km away, you can explore by car/bike or on foot everything from turf lakes and reclaimed land to woodlands and heathland. There is a folder in the apartment that tells you our favourite local walks and bike rides!!

Houseboat owner

I'm a global nomad that finally found my feet right back where I started, in the watery wetlands of my birth. Coming 'home' to the water has been deeply rewarding, fulfilling a childhood dream of becoming a water dweller.

Right from the start, I wanted to create a professional space on the houseboat that enables others to share this unique experience. I designed the Riverside Studio myself, optimising the space using all the clever concepts from the Tiny Houses movement. Since 2018 it has been offering people a small slice of their own paradise here on the water. I even road tested it myself for three months while the rest of the houseboat was renovated.

I speak fluent English, Swedish and Dutch, and can get by well enough in spoken French.
