View of the boat, with canoe, in late autumn, very low tide.
In wintertime with very high tide. The water can rise up to 9 meters extra, leaving most of the land 'drowned' for some time. Boat is connected to 2 big steel poles, very safe.
High tide. All the land you see here will disappear within some days, changing the river into a very big lake.
View from terrace on the dyke.
Entrance in spring.
Low tide in summer time. Five meters in front of the boat a strand appears where wild horses regularly play, graze and drink.
Also bovine animals and calfs graze and drink in this area.

Houseboat summary

The boat is situated in 'Het Meertje', a side-arm of the river Waal (Rhine), together with 10 other boats. The location is on the edge of the Nijmegen city centre and the rural Ooij-polder where you can bike, walk and relax endlessly. Did you know by the way that Nijmegen is the oldest city of the Netherlands and that in 2021 the Roman limes were put on Unesco's World Heritage list? Also in terms of health, green and sustainability, Nijmegen scores internationally very high.

Houseboat description

We have 5 different terraces on and around the boat where you can sit, relax and enjoy sunshine or shadow all day: 4 of them are on the boat, one big terrace is on the dyke, where our garden lies.

The kitchen is functional and basic, not super luxurious. We don't have a dishwasher, nor a micro wave. But we do have a kitchen island, we cook on gas. And of course a toaster, coffee machine and water cooker. To the kitchen attached is a big living space, with a dining table, chairs and stereo set (and a piano).

Downstairs there is furthermore a hall, toilet, bathroom and the master bedroom.

Two different stairs bring you to the first floor. Here you find another bedroom, toilet, washbasin, small kitchenette and the central living room, with TV and stereo set.

The whole accommodation is about 150 m2.

The houseboat is not suitable for families with little children who cannot swim. Not all sections of the boat have a fence that protects against falling into the water.

You can swim in 'Het Meertje', if the water level of the river Waal is high enough. In summer time, with the effects of climate change, sometimes the water level is too low to swim or canoo. There's a swimming pool ladder on the boat, that takes you directly to the water. Diving is not permitted, because the water can be rather shallow.

There is a yellow canoe for 2 persons that may be used. Of course this is at your own risk.

How to get there

Maps suggests that our exact location/address (het Meertje 3) lies a little ahead. It's therefore better/safer to put Ubbergseweg 12  in your navigation.

Number 12 is situated opposite to the entrance path to our boat. The Ubbergseweg is the main road, where you also park the car.

Car parking: tariff in our zone is € 1,60 per hour, Monday till Saturday (9-18 hours). Thursday night (18-21) is late night shopping, also € 1,60 per hour. A day ticket (9-18) costs € 12,50. Sundays are free of charge.

About the area

The Nijmegen region is beautiful and diverse: the city itself is old, with a young vibe, partly because of the presence of the Radboud University. Lots of cultural offers, bars, restaurants, festivals (including De Vierdaagse, world famous walking event in July).

In the region you'll find forests, hills, heath fields, lakes, rivers and streams, beaches, small villages and 'polders'. The German border is about 5 kilometers away; cities like Düsseldorf, Essen, Duisburg and Köln can all be reached within a 2 hours drive.

In the Netherlands, Nijmegen is situated in the eastern part of the country. Together with Arnhem (20 kilometers) Nijmegen forms a city region.

Amsterdam is about 120 kilometers away. By car or train (direct line) reachable in 1,5 hour. Rotterdam is also about 120 kilometers, Utrecht 85, The Hague 135, Eindhoven 80, Maastricht 140, Antwerp 160, Brussels 205.

    Lovely place to stay

We had a great stay on Christel & Frank's houseboat, they we're very welcoming and made us feel at home right away. It isn't a long drive from Dortmund while you do have a complete new and unique experience. A great solution for those who want to stay a bit closer to home these days. We loved the calm of the area where the boat is located and also having the city center so close-by. Would recommend! Tschüss Fenna
