Houseboat summary

Don’t be fooled by the age of this 127 year old ‘grandma of all houseboats’. Despite the fact that the Yellow Ferry is the oldest ferryboat you will find on the West Coast, it has all the amenities you expect in the finest modern houses around the world. But this boat offers so much more then just great comfort and style. This is history.

Houseboat description

First job: people carrier

The boat was built and launched in 1888, called SS City of Seattle, and ran for 35 years to Puget Sound. After that it served as a car ferry and yard ferry during WWII, carrying 900 shipyard workers every day. After the war she quit this job and finally found a new destination: being one of the most amazing houseboats on the planet, owned by family Tellis since 1956.

Second job: laying on the bottom

The bright yellow color, mixed by the artist Jean Varda, is a clear sign that the boat fits in the artistic culture of Sausalito. A great future lay ahead and the name was changed into The Yellow Ferry. However, maintaining this masterpiece was not as easy as hoped. The underwater worm 'turedo' liked the boat so much that it ate half of it and the former ferry sank for 12 years to the bottom of Sausolito bay. Only the main deck stuck out of the water at high tide – but that didn’t stop Miriam Tellis from living here. In 1983 the younger Tellis son Christopher decide to restore the ferry and put her on a concrete barge. Well, that took five years, and in 1988 the Yellow Ferry floated again. There was a party never to forget.

Third job: being there forever

The whole boat was completely restored with double wall redwood, central heating, modern wiring and new amenities. That resulted in an amazing 8,000 square feet living and shop space – and it should be there for many, many years. The Tellis family, forever connected to this amazing houseboat, still lives on half of the ship, and run both the shop and the marina. The other half is all at your disposal, giving you the chance to enjoy both this ship and the amazing city of Sausalito.

Amazing location

As extraordinary as the Ferry, is its location. Surrounded by water on all sides, the ferry occupies a intimate relationship to the bay, the tides, the waterfowl and marine mammals that is unlike any conventional home or other houseboat. It is staggeringly beautiful and feels a world apart from the bustle of modern life. The ferry’s fleet of kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats and surfboards will allow you to be on the water all you wish.
