Living on the water

Living on the water

Why houseboats can help save the planet We are now confronted with several problems regarding real estate. Some cities like London are facing a housing crisis because there is not enough living space. Architects have to take sea level rise into consideration, as well as other consequences of climate change. To put it in a nutshell: we have less and less land to accommodate an ever-growing population. The solution is found in living on the water, from single houseboats to floating communities By Margaux Tailpied / BookaHouseboat Over the last few years, housing policies have quite changed. Before, when it came to water, we used to do everything to hold it out by building dams and barriers. But it is more likely that in the future, we will have to learn how to live with water. That means living ON water. After all, 70% of the surface of Earth is water-covered. Learn to live with water More importantly: climate change will force us to live with water – whether we like it or not. Simpl

The Divorce Houseboat

The Divorce Houseboat

Cold feet? Consider buying this prenuptial houseboat!   Our social behavior affects the way that our homes are designed. And do you know what a tendency is in our modern society? Divorce. An Amsterdam-based design studio therefor created a modern houseboat that can split apart, just like your relationship. Consequently, when its inhabitants decide to go their separate ways, the two units of the floating home can be detached and each spouse ends up with an independent house.   This may seem quite cynic and awkward to buy a house with your spouse and already consider a possible break-up. But is it really different from a prenuptial agreement? It is not very optimistic but at least it is realistic, when you think of increasing divorce rates. Plus, the break-up process is complicated enough when you have to sort things out regarding the administration, children, personal belongings… In this case, at least the spouses will not have to think about finding a new place to live.   Artists Impr

Reasons for connectedness

Reasons for connectedness

Houseboat communities have always been close The sad death of the British politician Jo Cox once again shows the strength of houseboat communities. Cox, living on a houseboat on the River Thames at the Hermitage Moorings, was paid a two-minute tribute by the close-knit community of houseboat owners in London. This is typical of people living together on the water: they have always had a strong sense of the need for a civil society. Anne Wainwright, chairman of the HCM said on the community's website: “Today is the saddest day of this close community. We have lost a dear, dear friend in the most tragic and outrageous circumstances. We pay tribute to our amazing, wonderful, and spirited member of this community. A beacon of hope who believed in love, friendship, and values that we all so much need at this time. The community will continue to be inspired by her relentless energy and commitment to all that is good. Our thoughts go to her husband Brendan and her two wonderful children.” D
