Houseboat summary

Enter this spacious and private apartment on our traditional freight ship - built in 1914 - on the Eastern Docks and indulge yourself in a world of nautical luxury. The perfect place to relax after another great day in the buzzing city of Amsterdam. Utilized with a bathtub, floor heating, huge flat screen tv and a kitchen in case you don't want to eat out. Not to mention the wonderful surroundings of this houseboat, with astonishing architecture, wide water views and many lovely restaurants at walking distance. This is Amsterdam like you have never seen before.

Houseboat description

A brand new apartment, we hope you like the result. The high ceilings will give you a feeling that you cannot experience in many other houseboats. The windows above the gangway provide great light into the approximately 30 sqm room, while the two portholes give a view directly on the water. Don't be surprised to be welcomed by a swan or duck - to name just a few of the many friendly animals swimming here.

The bedroom

The sleeping area is fitted with a comfortable queen sized bed (which can be put apart so you have two single beds if you prefer) and luxury linen. During summer the boat is actually quite cool, and the fan on the ceiling will bring a nice breeze if required. During the colder months you will be nice and warm thanks to the comfortable floor heating.

The kitchen

Centered in the middle of the apartment you will find a small, yet fully equipped kitchen with two burners, a large fridge, a dishwasher, a quooker tap, a coffee maker and all the basics you need to do some cooking.

The living room

The living room has a comfortable couch that can be used as a sleeping couch in case of need. The far end of the living room shows the coolest eye catcher you can imagine: the original heavy steel door that lead to the original forecastle of the ship. What a place to relax after a great day in Amsterdam, have a good glass of wine or just watch some tv.

The bathroom

The bathroom is something we really find important. Therefore we have chosen to place a (whirlpool) bathtub shower combo. Of course there is a sink, toilet and boards to place your toiletries. This room is also nice and bright.

General information

The houseboat is completely private, so you don't have to share any space with other people. We live on the same boat and use the same entrance, but thanks to great insulation you will most likely not even notice other people living on the boat. We get asked a lot if you get sea sick while staying on the boat. We have never heard of someone gotten seasick, however, it is a boat of course and in case of heavy winds the boat will move a bit and you might hear the wind blowing (we provide ear plugs, just in case). This is part of the houseboat experience, and we're pretty sure you will truly love it!

Never expected a houseboat to be so cool

We had a lovely 4-day stay in September and were absolutely surprised by the space that this place has to offer. The entrance of the ship - an amazing 40 meter long ship over 100 years old - leads you to the hallway where you have your own private entrance. Once in the appartment you have everything you need: a comfortable living room, kitchen and sleeping area. This is not separate, but since the place is basically for two persons max this not a problem at all. And the best of all was the bathroom with super nice bath with shower (very nice after a late summer swim we enjoyed so much!)-  And last but not least: loved the hosts.  Anne-Marie and René were there to answer all our questions. god I hated to leave this place.

    Lovely retreat & location

I had a fabulous stay at AnneMarie and Rene's boathouse.  What a cute apartment and great hosts!  The home was a fantastic base for exploring Amsterdam - far enough from the noisy hub pub - but close enough to walk or bike around town easily.  Sleeping with the porthole windows open was my favorite!  Thank you!

    Great houseboat experience

We had a pleasant stay in Annemarie´s houseboat. It is really clean, well equipped and with lovely arrangements in a silent but beautiful area of the canal. It´s pretty simple to get into the city or get some food around the corner. The communication with Annemarie was clear and very friendly. She is a great host and it is impressive what they did with the housboat. Thank you for the tour through your private part as well.

    Absolutely recommendable!

    Wonderful week-long stay!

This was our first visit to Amsterdam and we were a bit apprehensive about staying out of the city center.  After a week on the houseboat, however, absolutely no regrets!!!!

the accommodations are adorable and fully equipped with everything you need for a relaxing stay.  After a quick Uber from the airport to the houseboat, we were greeted by one of our hosts (Rene) who helped us with our bags and helped to orient us to the neighborhood.

There are at least 3 different tram/bus lines into Central Station within a short walk, as well as supermarkets, pharmacy and restaurants.  On day 1 we walked over to the market and picked up items for breakfasts; the kitchen was already equipped with various coffee, tea, and a welcome bottle of wine!!

The boat is in a very safe and quiet area, which was a welcome reprieve from the hustle bustle of the city. The bed is very comfortable and the updated bath was a lovely extra!  Staying on the Adventuur made our first trip to the Netherlands all the more special, and we hope to return next year!!

    3 Days on houseboat Avontuur

Our stay on this houseboat was lovely. Excellent fittings and finishes, tastefully decorated. It all worked also very well with the public transport, although a tiny bit out of the city center it was a lovely "coming home" feeling every day.

Beautiful houseboat in nice and quiet area

We had a fantastic stay. Loved the little houseboat. It was clean and had everything we needed, fresh towels, kitchen appliances, and extra blankets for cold nights. The landlord was also very friendly. Walking distance to centrum was 45 min. Strongly recommend this place if you're happy to live on the outskirt of the Dam.

    Wonderful time in Amsterdam

The Avontuur was simply amazing! Myself and a friend had a great stay in Amsterdam for New Year's 2017 celebration. The boat itself was wonderfully furnished with an extremely comfortable bed, and cozy couch. The décor was a very nice touch with chandelier and wonderful paintings! Very modern kitchen amenities with on-demand boiling water, small cook top, micro/convection oven. The bath was also simply wonderful with a rain-head shower and jetted tub! Location was perfect. On the map it may look like it is a little far outside of town, but it indeed was very easy to get to. The #26 tram is nearby that is only 2 stops to Amsterdam Centraal, and the #10 is also right there that goes to the museum district. Super easy to get around. Also bus (including night bus) stops just at the end of the street! Very quiet area and nice neighbors. The hosts were wonderful and very welcoming! Great directions and recommendations for the surrounding area. I can't say enough good things about our stay!!

Just a lovely houseboat of lovely people

We finished our 4 week Europe trip and could not have chosen a better place to stay. We enjoyed Amsterdam with everything it has to offer, but we even enjoyed the quitness of this special neighborhood. The appartment was just as described in the ad and offered everything we could ask for. Very good value for money. Hope to be back here one day and highly recommend it!

Great boat, great location, great value! Fantastic romantic weekend in Amsterdam

My wife and I have just returned from a fantastic stay with Renee and Annemarie on the beautifully restored houseboat "Avontuur". The boat was exactly as described; warm, comfortable, extremely tastefully decorated and complete with a private entrance, small but functional kitchen which allowed us to cook and a clean bathroom with shower and whirlpool bath. The location might look a little out of town if you don't know Amsterdam but it is only 10 mins or so on a very easy bus to and from the city centre and it is also possible to catch a tram, cycle or walk. Personally we found that staying just outside the city centre allowed us to see a lovely neighbourhood that we probably wouldn't have seen otherwise. The location of the boat is quiet, relaxed but with easy access to a couple of useful shops for self-catering essentials. On Renee's recommendation we also visited a local neighbourhood restaurant called Ocean. It was 5 mins walk and a real delight. Instead of the generic, touristy eateries in the centre we were treated to some great home cooked food, locally brewed beers (from the vibrant windmill microbrewery about 15 mins walk away, well worth a visit) and really friendly service. Amsterdam is such a great city to spend some time. It has beautiful canals, parks and architecture, it is easy, safe and relaxed to wander or cycle around and you can do as much or as little as you want to in terms of museums, galleries, exhibitions etc... The city is so influenced by the waterways that staying on a boat really adds another dimension to the experience though and I can't imagine a better place to stay that Avontuur - great boat, great location, great value and lovely people. As much as we value variety, we won't hesitate to stay here again when we get the opportunity. Thanks for a great stay Renee & Annemarie!

Great Stay in a Great Space

We stayed onboard the Avontuur for 10 days and absolutely loved our time there. We were amazed how spacious, quiet and comfortable our accommodations were, and we enjoyed the area where it is located very much. Easy access to transit, shopping, and wonderful restaurants/cafes made it the ideal home away from home.

    A great place to stay.

My girlfriend and I recently spent a weekend on the Avontuur. It is a wonderful space. It is a very clean and comfortable space far enough out of town to be lovely and quiet. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. I recommend it highly. The boat is very near to both bus and tram stops and only a 45 min stroll into the city. There is also a supermarket very nearby for some essentials. Coffee was provided

    Just perfect

We really enjoyed our stay on this amazingly houseboat.  We have stayed in a lot of places where the pictures did not match the accommodation but this was not one of them.  The pictures did match the boat and more.  A quiet location just outside the city with easy access to central station and all of the attractions.  Would highly recommend staying here

Relaxing houseboat in a quiet neighborhood on the east side of the city

My fiancee and I really enjoyed our stay on the houseboat Avontuur. It was clean, relaxing, comfortable and felt very spacious, just as advertised which was great after a long day in the city. The beds were alright, nothing too soft or fancy, but they weren’t necessarily uncomfortable. The area does feel a little farther away from the touristy city attractions (around 30 mins to get to most things using city transportation), however because of this, the area was very quiet and not many tourists are around. The room got a little toasty in the summer weather and we were unable to leave the windows open overnight due to bugs (an unfortunate side effect to staying on a boat), but the ceiling fan did help a lot and so it wasn’t too bad and we were also able to leave the windows open during the day without worrying about bugs. The bathroom is quite excellent, although only separated by a simple glass door so be sure not to peek in on whoever you’re traveling with ;). Overall we really enjoyed our stay here. Annemarie was a great host and very accommodating during our stay. She gave very detailed directions, instructions, and suggestions which was nice to have. Checking in and out was a breeze and Annemarie kept up communication well throughout the trip.

    A wonderful vacation

The name Avontuur definitely came true for us. It was an adventure in a very relaxing calming and peaceful atmosphere.  The houseboat itself was very charming we had everything we needed ... including a hairdryer !!!   The neighborhood was quiet and it was very easy to get to anywhere we needed to go by bus tram   Bike or using our own 2 feet    We always felt very  safe and  everybody we asked for information was extremely helpful. The two grocery stores nearby were awesome. Lots of cheese. Renee was there to  welcome us  and we were invited for coffee but we are sorry to say we never made it because we were going from the time we got up till the time we fall into bad which by the way was a very comfortable bed    Annemarie we met when we left.  We really hope to be back in June and knock on their door for that cup of coffee !!!   It was an incredible experience    Thank you Sabine and Jeff.

Leuke woonboot.
