Welcome to The Netherlands: land of water

The Netherlands may be a small country, but it's famous for its canals and rivers. Take for instance the big cities of Amsterdam, Utrecht and Leiden; walking around, you cannot miss the beautiful canals that run through it. As a visitor, nothing beats taking a trip on the many canal cruises from where you can enjoy these majestic cities from the water. Another fun thing to do is watch the boats from the waterside, while sitting at a nice restaurant or cafe. With a drink in your hand and your head in the sun, you will see the boats go by. Now that feels like holiday!

I follow rivers

The many rivers in the Netherlands make it a real country of water. Leaving the city behind, the view from your bike, car or train will change from buildings and houses to more and more wide open spaces with fields, farms, cows and the many rivers that run through the Dutch landscape. See the little streams that glister in the sun, where farm animals drink from, or admire the wide rivers where enormous ships with different goods pass by. The Rijn, Maas, Waal, IJssel and Lek, these are ancient and important Dutch rivers around which many cities and villages have risen. Without these waters, the Netherlands would be without great cities like Amsterdam, Utrecht and Leiden. You can also rent a sailing ship or a tall ship and sail these waters with a captain and a private crew who with take care of everything.

Live on your own Dutch houseboat

Every Dutch city with a canal or river has it: houseboats! Living on the water is what the Dutch love to do. When in the Netherlands, you will see houseboats in every shape or color, with roofterraces, balconies and even little gardens. For the Dutch, living on a houseboat is just as normal as living in a ‘normal’ house. Being on the water offers you a different perspective of the city, it's quiet and above all, the sound of the water feels soothing and relaxing. The great news is: now you can also enjoy the pleasure of living on the water! Enjoy a holiday on your own houseboat and feel part of the city and blend in with the locals.
